Day 10 – Largest in-game surprise I’ve experienced?

Good question for today! šŸ™‚

I’ve had several incidents in gaming situations as a GM that surprised me, but none of them quite like the one I’m about to describe. In a game of the Genesis RPG, a relatively obscure science fiction roleplaying set against a human expansion backdrop with some realistic science to it (and none of these Drama Points things), two players (call one James and the other Angie) were dealing with some problems in the vacuum of space, notably in a cargo bay. As best I can recall, James spotted something in the cargo bay that was about to attack Angie, and it was very close to her. He fired his energy weapon, saying that he was going to try and hit Angie’s oxygen tanks!, in the hopes the explosion might harm the creature. Truth be told, James and Angie did not get along as either players or characters, and Angie had told me that she planned to leave the gaming group after the scenario. Suffice it to say, I was shocked and not too happy about James’s decision, and in the end, the explosion when he hit her oxygen tanks killed her outright, and shredded James’s vacc suit and exposing him to the vacuum of space! His character died in something like seven (7) minutes, as none of the other players were able to come to his rescue in time.

I remember being totally surprised by the events, since I never thought that James and Angie would take their (gaming) “relationship” so far, and of course I was totally prepared for the outcome of the explosion and its aftermath as well.

Just goes to prove that some gamers (including myself) are…crazy. šŸ™‚
