Kids running up and down the streets, shouting “Trick or treat!” at the top of their lungs, obedient parents in tow. People dressing up in various costumes, some good some bad. All sorts of Halloween candies, toffee, and caramel apples, pumpkin pie, pumpkin cookies, and so forth. Hollowed out pumpkins in windows lit by a single candle within. Witches, ghoulies, and goblins, oh my.

I just want to wish everyone a Happy Halloween!

Be safe, treat the kids right tonight, and watch out for all those Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga look-alikes! 🙂

Gaming Is Off For Today (Sunday), but Some RPG Thoughts October 31, 2016

One of my players is doing other stuff (work-related) today.

So Sunday gaming is off for today.

I can’t say that I’m sad about this, as I’m dealing with a couple of things that need my attention, but I really have been missing the roleplaying game stuff and the socialising that it also brings to the table (no pun intended).

I’m looking at stuff for the Coriolis – The Third Horizon RPG and the Continuum: Roleplaying in the Yet, but have also been contemplating going back to running the Blue Planet v2 RPG as well. We’ll see what shakes out as well, but for now I’m concentrating on Continuum: Roleplaying in the Yet and Coriolis – The Third Horizon.

It was exactly 50 (!!) years ago today that fans bid farewell to William Hartnell’s Doctor on Doctor Who and said “hello” to Patrick Troughton’s Doctor.

Has it really been that long? Sheesh! 🙂

A Surprise Gaming Session on Friday Night October 30, 2016

I meant to get around to this yesterday, but that just didn’t happen. But better one day late than never, right? 🙂

Friday night, the gaming group met for the usual weekly ritual :), and we had a pretty good night.

I had originally planned to run a Chill 3rd Edition Halloween scenario, but that didn’t pan out due to other circumstances (see my earlier post about this), and then there was the possibility that they would create test sample characters for the Coriolis – The Third Horizon RPG, so I was looking forward to Friday night.

The players surprised me completely Friday night. After arriving around 7:05 pm or so, we sat around for 10 minutes or so and talked about the week that was. The players then informed that me they’d decided they didn’t want to put me on the spot with Coriolis, and then DavidM surprised the heck out of my by pulling out his copy of Sixcess Core! He informed me that he was giving me some time off to re-read up on Continuum: Roleplaying in the Yet or perhaps to run a test of Coriolis – The Third Horizon. He asked us, the players, what type of game we wanted to play, and everyone agreed that some fantasy would be nice.

The next 2-1/2 hours were spent talking about the elements of a fantasy world, creating the basics of said fantasy world, and then creating player characters with the others. I decided that I would create Haven Randar, a foresty type with skill with a bow (and a secret or two). Things worked out really well, and I was pretty pleased with my character. The other players, including Ellie, had a good time working out their characters as well, though Ellie commented that she wished it was a character for the Trudvang Chronicles, but she was in good spirits for the night (especially after the tough week she’d had).

We spent around 35 minutes playing some sample combats after DavidM went through the combat system, and then prepared a few notes on stuff we’d like to see happen in the game.

Overall, a really good night of gaming and I was taken totally by surprise. (Seems like an easy thing to do these days.) Have to say that I’m looking forward to playing Haven next week, so am pretty pleased overall.

Something weird for Halloween.

It concerns the Tollund Man. What is the Tollund Man? Check out this National Geographic piece.

But that’s not the best part.

Gotta love this stuff. And can’t make it up for Halloween, even! 🙂

Weekend Gaming Thoughts October 28, 2016

Work is done for the day, so it’s time to turn my attention to other things.

It’s the weekend. The Halloween weekend.

I had it in mind to run a scenario for the Chill 3rd Edition RPG for Halloween, but to be honest, I hit a bad case of writer’s block during the last two weeks of trying to work on it, and have abandoned the idea altogether for this year. Will definitely try to get the scenario written for next year’s Halloween, but no promises (you reading this, KathyB?).

In the meantime, the science fiction rpg that I had planned to run has been boxed up in the cupboard once more, as to be honest, something happened this week with the game designer and publisher that I’m not going to talk about, but which has completely soured me on the game. In retrospect, it’s probably a good idea I’m not going to run that particular game, as I’d rather run “Firefly meets the Arabian Nights” anyway, so will wait to run the Coriolis – The Third Horizon RPG when that game comes out. However, as a backer of the Kickstarter, I’ve got a a lot of the chapters for the game already (though not in necessarily complete form), and may do something with the game with my players.

The Friday night players have expressed an interest in playing the game this evening, possibly generating sample characters to see how the game works, and I can always run them through the Quickstart adventure for the game next week. So who knows?

We’ll see how things shake out this evening.

A Sore Feet Day October 28, 2016

It has been a somewhat difficult week, with all sorts of shite going on. I didn’t feel like inflicting it on the folks who read my LJ or WordPress blogs, and so have not (and am not) doing so.

The weather since last night has been quite nasty, with snow and rain, and the temperatures are cold. This is not helping my leg/ankle pain, and it’s also made me feel every arthritic pain that I’ve got. It’s supposed to warm up somewhat today, but it isn’t warm enough for my taste (if you take my meaning), and this is obviously the start of late Fall or early Winter so…ick.

Yesterday was my regularly scheduled Footcare appointment. As a result, my feet have been in seriously agonising pain today, and I have managed to work from home. I have taken a very high dose of Tylenol (as per the doctor’s orders), and this has helped somewhat, but it’s been a very…painful day, and not all that enjoyable. Work has helped distract me somewhat though, so this is a good thing.
