Happy Birthday, Matt! 🙂

Today is the birthday of Matthew McFarland, one of the nicest people in the gaming industry that you’re likely to meet.

Also known as “BlackHat Matt”, Matt works as a speech-language pathologist during the day, but has been writing and developing roleplaying games professionally since 1998. He’s got a lot of rpg writing and assorted work under his belt, but is currently a founder of the company Growling Door Games
and has just released the Monsters Sourcebook for the Chill 3rd Edition RPG.

May the Goddess bless you with happiness, health, prosperity, and good cheer for the coming year. May you always have a warm breeze at your back. And may the next year also be a Chilly one as well. 🙂

Here’s hoping you have a terrific birthday, Matt! 🙂

We continue on with #RPGaDAY in August.

#RPGaDAY

Day 12 – Which RPG has the most inspiring art?

Interesting question.

I’ve got an interesting answer to this.

For the older rpgs out there, the most inspiring art for me came from the old DragonQuest RPG from SPI as well as the fantastic art for the SkyRealms of Jorune RPG that inspired so many story ideas for me back in the day.

From the modern day, the artwork for the Chill 3rd Edition RPG, as well as that of the Coriolis – The Third Horizon and the soon-to-be-released Trudvang Chronicles RPG have been the most inspirational artwork.

I meant to get around to this yesterday, but that just didn’t happen. But better one day late than never, right? 🙂

Friday night, the gaming group met for the usual weekly ritual :), and we had a pretty good night.

I had originally planned to run a Chill 3rd Edition Halloween scenario, but that didn’t pan out due to other circumstances (see my earlier post about this), and then there was the possibility that they would create test sample characters for the Coriolis – The Third Horizon RPG, so I was looking forward to Friday night.

The players surprised me completely Friday night. After arriving around 7:05 pm or so, we sat around for 10 minutes or so and talked about the week that was. The players then informed that me they’d decided they didn’t want to put me on the spot with Coriolis, and then DavidM surprised the heck out of my by pulling out his copy of Sixcess Core! He informed me that he was giving me some time off to re-read up on Continuum: Roleplaying in the Yet or perhaps to run a test of Coriolis – The Third Horizon. He asked us, the players, what type of game we wanted to play, and everyone agreed that some fantasy would be nice.

The next 2-1/2 hours were spent talking about the elements of a fantasy world, creating the basics of said fantasy world, and then creating player characters with the others. I decided that I would create Haven Randar, a foresty type with skill with a bow (and a secret or two). Things worked out really well, and I was pretty pleased with my character. The other players, including Ellie, had a good time working out their characters as well, though Ellie commented that she wished it was a character for the Trudvang Chronicles, but she was in good spirits for the night (especially after the tough week she’d had).

We spent around 35 minutes playing some sample combats after DavidM went through the combat system, and then prepared a few notes on stuff we’d like to see happen in the game.

Overall, a really good night of gaming and I was taken totally by surprise. (Seems like an easy thing to do these days.) Have to say that I’m looking forward to playing Haven next week, so am pretty pleased overall.

Spent a relatively relaxing time of it this afternoon after getting home from work.

Did a bit of writing, and took a nap. Also tried to figure out where the water dripping from the base of my fridge is coming from, but nothing obvious there. (Admittedly, I didn’t look too intensively. Didn’t want to make it worse.)

Gaming is on for this evening.

Since the Chill 3rd Edition Halloween scenario isn’t ready quite yet, as I needed to do a complete re-write of the adventure (for reasons I won’t go into here), I’m not sure what the Friday night gamers will do this evening. Have to wait and see.

In the meantime, I need to make some supper before the gaming group arrives.

Have a good night, folks. 🙂
