Just got home about 20 minutes or so ago from the Diabetes Centre and my six-month appointment with the diabetes and endocrine specialist there.

The news was better than I expected, but not all that great.

I got to the Riverside Hospital for my 3:20 pm appointment about 10 minutes early, and sat and relaxed while I waited to see the doctor. I didn’t have a long wait, and then got to see one of the nurses and technicians, who weighed me and took my blood pressure. I was down about four (!!) pounds weight-wise, and my blood pressure was perfectly normal. Guess those pills are doing their work. Good news. About 20 minutes later, I got to see the doctor, and that’s where things went a bit…south.

We went over my blood test results, and things were pretty much as I expected. My a1C results were up by a full two points (and I’m not saying what it was here). The triglycerides are very high, but my cholesterol levels seem to be doing better. The PSA test results were down slightly from the previous, but he told me that he’ll make sure that my family doctor keeps alert and up-to-date on the PSA stuff (for obvious reasons, at least if you’re a man over 50 years old!). We talked at length about what’s been going on in my life medically (for those who don’t know, it’s been pretty clear in my blog entries!), and he decided not to make any medication changes, but did say that I need to get back on some sort of healthier diet again. I also talked to him about the physiotherapy Catch-22 that I’m in right now, and he said that while it’s usually outside his purview, he’d arrange for me to have a shoulder MRI as soon as possible. We talked about a few other medical concerns I have, and then we were done.

After making the next appointment and setting up the blood tests and the like for the next time around in six months, I managed to get home relatively quickly with my sister, and got home about 25 minutes ago. Will now have a hot cup of tea and half a bagel with lox, and then sit back with my feet up and do a bit of reading.

Just got back from the eye specialist at the Eye Institute at the Ottawa General.

I was a little bit concerned, as I’ve had some blurry vision of late (but I try to account for that due to the bug I’ve had and some of the stuff going on with my spinal nerves and the shoulder business). On top of that, I’ve had some instances where I think I’ve got a tiny blank spot in my vision; it’s come and gone so fast that I sometimes think it’s my imagination. So enough worries about my vision going into the yearly exam.

I was the last appointment of the morning with the specialist, Dr. Mintsoulis, and managed to get in only about 15 minutes late. I didn’t drive, having taken a taxi since my vision wouldn’t be that good after the appointment because of the dilation drops they have to use for the tests. Anyway, once I got to the exam clinic, I got taken in very quickly (last appointment may have its advantages), and the tests were had.

Suffice it to say, I was given the freezing drops, the dilation drops, and another set of drops that leaves a bit of a yellow residue around the eye for several hours. I had all the standard eye tests, including the vision test where you tell them letters you see on board at the far end of the room with various lenses affecting your vision. In addition, I had the pressure test and the one that I have once every few years. A small needle takes a sample of eye fluid for testing for retinopathy and several other conditions.

Pending the results of the last test, the verdict was pretty good. My vision has degraded somewhat, but not worth the cost of a new pair of lenses and specs. There are no visual symptoms of retinopathy and nothing else seems to be out of place with my eyes, other than a case of eye dryness.

I left the hospital and went out for a late brunch at a well hidden decent restaurant for breakfast in South Ottawa, and then headed home. Both trips by taxi, of course. I got home, and made a hot cup of tea. I took a (second) shower when I got home, but the eyes were still pretty bad from the morning tests, and I’ve been feeling under the weather the last few days. Feeling pretty dysfunctional for the afternoon as the eye dilation drops and the other drops they gave me for the eye exam made everything bright, blurry, and larger than life.

I spent most of the afternoon napping, after covering myself with a duvet and just lying down on the couch in the living room.

The eye dilator solution still hasn’t worn off fully. Fuzzy vision is so much fun. (Riiiiight.)

The last few days of February are upon us, and it promises to be a busy week for me.

Tomorrow, I’ve got my annual eye doctor appointment. Being diabetic, this is an important deal for me. Promises to be a long morning at the Eye Clinic at the Ottawa General Hospital, and then visually challenging due to the dilating drops they administer before the other tests.

Wednesday is another hospital day. First off, I have to have my six-month diabetes blood tests done, and then it’s off to the General again for two ultrasounds of my ankles. The latter tests have been scheduled for almost five months, and I’ll be glad to get them over with. Just hope they don’t show anything too bad.

Friday will see me driving mom around to several appointments and possibly a bit of grocery shopping.

Suffice to say it’s going to be a long week, one where I’m going to need to rest up my feet and body a bit on the weekend. Then it’s more doctor appointments next week. Oh, joy, oh bliss! NOT!

Gaming for this evening, Wednesday night, has been cancelled.

It has been a horrible day, to be honest, and the appointment with the specialist, a sports medicine and orthopedic surgeon, did not go well. Very badly, to be honest, and the diagnosis and prognosis are not good. Add to that the pain that I’m currently in (on a 0 to 10 scale, I’m at 11 or so), and I just don’t feel up to gaming.

So gaming is off.

Personally, I’m sorry that I had to cancel gaming tonight, as I was rather looking forward to continuing work with the Wednesday night gamers on the The Dark Eye RPG characters and campaign with them, but such is life. Real, that is.

Today promises to be a very long day.

I did not sleep well last night. Between the bouts of coughing that I had in the late evening and that led to some bad diarrhea, as well as the sheer agonypain that my left shoulder/arm/neck/back are currently suffering, sleep did not come easy and when it did come, tossing and turning were the best that I managed to have.

To make the day even longer for this Monday, I have my appointment at the Montfort Hospital this evening for an MRI at 9:30 pm. Not sure how I’m going to get there yet, since my left arm and shoulder are so bad that I can’t use the arm for much of anything these days.

Ah, well… one step during the day at a time.

A Long (Sick) Day October 20, 2017

Yesterday was one heck of a day.

As noted in yesterday’s blog entry, I had made a doctor’s appointment since my illness has gone on too long and the coughing has gotten much worse.

The appointment was originally scheduled for 4:00 pm, but as I was eating lunch the doctor’s receptionist called, and said that I could come in any time, as the office wasn’t too busy for the day. Mom decided to come with me, since she wanted me to take her grocery shopping afterwards, so…

The doctor and I talked and then he examined me. The diagnosis was a severe case of bronchitis, since he could hear the crackling in my lungs, and so he put me on a dose of antibiotic, the Biaxin stuff, for ten (10) days and said that I should get a bit of rest, if possible. He also told me that when I was well again, I needed to come in and have both the flu shot and the pneumonia shot, as the “season” was going to be brutal for both.

From the doctor’s office, I drove over to the nearest First Choice Haircutters, and finally got a haircut. I hadn’t been for a haircut since before I left for GenCon back in August, so it had been a while and I was somewhat shaggy. When I left the salon, I felt like I might have lost 3 lbs. or so. Might have, given that the stylist cut off almost 2 inches (!!) of my hair!

From there, it was over to the local Independent Grocery, where I would take in the antibotic prescription to the pharmacy and also help mom do the grocery shopping. Suffice to say, I was there for almost 1.5 hours (as my mom’s getting up there in years, and she’s somewhat…slow), but picked up a good $60 worth of groceries for myself. I took mom back to her place, and helped her unload the groceries she’d bought, and then we went back to my place and unloaded those groceries, and made supper for her.

By the time I’d taken mom home, and then returned from the house after supper, it was close to 10:00 pm.

I was knackered. And coughing away like hell.

But life goes on, right?

Finally Caved In (Doctor Appointment) October 19, 2017

Well, I’ve caved in.

I’ve had this bug – either a major bad cold or perhaps a bad case of bronchitis now – for around 3 or 4 weeks (I can’t really remember, to be honest). It’s not the flu, because even though I’ve been pretty warm/sweaty/whatever you want to call it or cold at times, I’ve not been running a fever.

But anyway, as I was saying, it’s been going on for a while, and I’m not really feeling better (I may be coughing worse), so… I’ve caved in today, and called the doctor’s office. I’ve got an appointment for 4:00 pm this afternoon, so we’ll see what he does and what he decides on for treatment based on that.

In the meantime, I’m just going to take a shower and relax. *cough, cough*

Just got home from picking up the new car (among other things).

It has been a somewhat strenuous day.

I had to go out this morning to the blood lab for some blood tests.

This afternoon, the folks at Mazda took me in to the dealership, where I picked up my new car (see this blog post about buying the car, and a pic of what the car looks like). I’m still missing one of the pieces of info about the car, the pink slip that you need to have in the car, but other than that, the car is paid off and I’ve arranged to take it in for winter tires either next month or in early October.

I then went out and did some grocery shopping that needed to be done. Just some of the vegetable basics, and some fish for supper.

Got home, and…my poor, blistered feet are bleeding.

*sigh*

I can’t win.

Visit to the Doctor, and the Hospital August 22, 2017

I have just gotten back home after seeing the doctor.

When I went to the doctor’s office for the appointment at 1:10 pm, I got there late as I had problems dressing my foot wound and getting a taxi over to his offices. I saw him around 1:45 pm, and after assessing my wounds he told me to get over to the Ottawa General Hospital, as my blisters were pretty bad, but there was more trouble. He gave me a letter to give to the triage nurse and doctors at the hospital, so I grabbed a cab over there.

At the hospital, it took roughly 2 or 3 hours to see the doctor, and she confirmed what was going on: The neuropathy in my feet has progressed and all the walking I did (too much, apparently!) at GenCon 2017 caused the blisters, but also a relatively bad case of cellulitis in both feet. The doctor prescribed treatment for me, told me to take it easy and off my feet as much as possible, and that hopefully the antibiotics (yes, there are two of them!) will clear things up in 10 to 15 days.

Both doctors told me that my days of walking that kind of distances and to the extent that I did at GenCon 2017 are over. The progression of the diabetes and the foot neuropathy are things that happen to pretty much all diabetics, and one just goes on from there.

Monday morning. The day before I leave for GenCon Indy.

Must have slept on the bad shoulder last night, as I’m in pretty bad pain this morning. Need to take a couple of pills now, and hope they mute the pain somewhat.

Not going to be able to get much rest today, as I’ve got two doctor appointments today, and have to do a bit of shopping for some of my medication related stuff (noticeably the insulin and the needles) and a couple of other sundries. I’ve also got to finish the packing for GenCon 2017

So this promises to be a busy day once more. I would have liked to have taken it easy and rested up a bit today, but such is not to be the case.
