It’s Sunday morning. Another Daylight Savings Time part of the year again.

I’m very tired. Not enough sleep, tossed and turned all night. To make matters worse, I’m suffering from vertigo this morning and have a terrible case of the dizzies. Blah.

Hopefully I’ll be feeling better after I shower, as I’ll be gaming with the Sunday group this afternoon. Tammy and SteveR have agreed that they’ll play some Torg Eternity RPG this afternoon so that I can get some practice in running the game before I run the adventure at CanGames 2018.

I figure that I’ll run an idea that I have for an adventure in the Living Land for the players today, and will hopefully manage to play through the game in a couple of sessions. Quite looking forward to it.

Have a good afternoon, folks.

Happy GM Day! March 4, 2018

Happy GM Day to all my fellow GameMasters out there!

I would like to wish all the GameMasters out there a very Happy GM Day!

While most gamers have tried to GM at one time or another, GameMastering is an art form of sorts. A person who plans to GM for a group of players has to have a facility of language, in order to get across to the players and their characters descriptions of what the player characters see, hear, taste, feel, and smell. It also helps with the atmosphere of the game. One has to have a sense of creativity and imagination, to create adventures and plots for the players and their characters. One has to know a bit about all manner of subjects in order to run rpgs, and spend a bit of time in a library (or these days on the internet, though I still prefer the former) researching subjects that one knows nothing about, to give games an element of verisimilitude. When all is said and done, the amount of enjoyment that the players get from a given adventure in an rpg is proportional to the amount of work that the GameMaster put into the adventure being played.

And in the end, GameMastering is a thankless job. Those of us who run games for our players have the patience of Job and a bit of insecurity in our running of games (at least I do), as players rarely thank those who run their games for the time, effort, work, and (hopefully) sheer enjoyment that they get out of their games.

So I would like to thank all the gamers who have GameMastered roleplaying games for me over the years, and to wish each and every GM out there a very Happy GameMaster’s Day.

And to Nick Roberts (wherever you are!), one of the former players in my Friday night gaming group who willingly picked up the GM dice and rulebooks and ran a game from time to time so that I might have the experience of playing in an rpg every so often, *THANK YOU*. And to David Matchuk (may he rest in peace), who had in recent years taken up the mantle so that I could get to play, another big shout out. I really did appreciate it.

Friday Gaming Session, Sort of March 2, 2018

I’m gaming tonight, sort of.

The Friday gaming group is taking some time off to deal with the death of DavidM, but I spoke to Kathy today and she said that she and Ellie would like to come over this evening and do some gaming. Ellie needs a distraction from DavidM’s death, and gaming is a good “therapy” for all concerned.

Since I know that Ellie’s been jonesing to play some Torg Eternity RPG, that’s what we’ll probably do a bit of this evening. I’ve got a couple of scenario basics that I want to test out and see whether the premises that I’ve come up with work, but we’ll see what happens tonight.

In any event, I’m looking forward to seeing them, and hopefully doing some gaming with them this evening.

Sunday Afternoon Gaming Cancelled February 25, 2018

It’s a Sunday to forget.

The weather forecast for today was freezing rain lasting into the middle or late afternoon. It hasn’t disappointed and is a pretty gloomy day out there with…freezing rain.

Anyway, the upshot of this is that the Sunday afternoon gaming session has been cancelled for today due to the weather. Not to mention the fact that Tammy is on-call for work this weekend. So once more the next session of the The Dark Eye RPG campaign will have to wait.

In the meantime, I have a rest day. 🙂

It’s that time of year again! 🙂

CanGames 2018 registration has opened!

So it’s time to register for a membership at the convention, sign up for a few games at the convention, and get into the gaming spirit that will culminate in the convention in just under three (3) months.

I just got back home from Fandom II here in Ottawa, and took care of my registration for the convention there. I’ll be running four (4) game sessions at the convention; you can check this blog entry of mine for the list and full description of the stuff I’ll be running there!

Hope to see you there!

Needless to say, tonight’s game session of gaming is cancelled.

Just can’t play tonight, in the aftermath of the death of DavidM last week.

Not sure when we’ll game again on Fridays, but for now need to mourn and heal somewhat.

For those who are interested, the early(bird) version of the gaming schedule for this year’s CanGames, to be held May 18th – 20th at the Rideau Curling Club here in Ottawa, has been posted up to the website. (You can find the schedule here, as they’re using the on-line schedule manager Sched once again this year.) Note that early Registration for CanGames 2018 is due to open on February 24th, so that’s a good thing.

Now that they’ve been confirmed, without further ado, here’s the schedule of games that I’ll be running at the convention. Since CanGames is using a piece of software that limits the blurb to thirty (30) words, I’ve included here the full blurb about each scenario. 🙂

*****
Day 1: The Living Land
Game: Torg Eternity RPG
Time: Friday, 7:00 pm – 11:00 pm
Number of Players: 6
Description: Six innocent strangers are transformed into heroes as an invading reality crashes down around them. They must work together to survive the strange and terrifying world that now surrounds them; a world of dinosaurs & death where once reliable machines no longer function. A Storm is coming…and it has a name!

The Diplomats of Mars
Game: John Carter of Mars – The Roleplaying Game
Time: Saturday, 2:00 pm – 6:00 pm
Number of Players: 5
Description: A simple, diplomatic mission to the small Red Martian kingdom of Voninka turns into a matter of survival and getting back to Helium alive! You’ll have to abandon fine words and the arts of diplomacy for a sword and a radium pistol. Are you up to the challenge? An adventure for the new John Carter of Mars Roleplaying Game.

The Tears of Ampharool
Game: Capharnaum – The Tales of the Dragon-Marked RPG
Time: Saturday, 6:00 pm – 11:00 pm
Number of Players: 5
Description: While travelling through the Desert of Fire, your caravan is surrounded by a great sandstorm and attacked by mysterious, perhaps ghostly assailants… After the storm, the characters see a fabulous palace above the sands, and the promise of adventure. And that’s just the beginning! Capharnaum – The Tales of the Dragon-Marked is a fantasy rpg set in an imaginary Arabia-like world, that borrows from the tales of the One Thousand and One Nights, as well as semitic legends and the ancient and mediaeval epics. Flamboyant and mythical, filled with light and thrilling adventure!

Day 1: The Living Land
Game: Torg Eternity RPG
Time: Sunday, 2:00 pm – 6:00 pm
Number of Players: 6
Description: Six innocent strangers are transformed into heroes as an invading reality crashes down around them. They must work together to survive the strange and terrifying world that now surrounds them; a world of dinosaurs & death where once reliable machines no longer function. A Storm is coming…and it has a name!
*****

For those interested in playing in any of these games, there are six (6) player spots each open for the two Torg Eternity RPG sessions, and five (5) player spots open for the John Carter of Mars – The Roleplaying Game game session and Capharnaum – The Tales of the Dragon-Marked RPG session. So if you’re interested in playing in one of the games I’m running at CanGames 2018 this year, please sign up early for the games, as slots may not be available at the convention itself.

Hope to see folks at the convention! 🙂

Sunday Playtest of John Carter of Mars – The Roleplaying Game February 19, 2018

Had a good day of stuff yesterday (Sunday).

I woke up Sunday morning feeling tired and unrested, as I do every morning these days for reasons I’ve made clear in my blog entries before, but had a nice pancake breakfast and then took an early shower. Did some cleaning up downstairs before going up for lunch.

SteveR had agreed to come over and game, sort of. We went through the mechanics of the forthcoming John Carter of Mars – The Roleplaying Game, and he used the character of Kantos Kan. We went through basic mechanics, some samples of how the game might run using a few test “encounters” that I set up, and finally some combat sequences (just to see how those worked).

The game mechanics (especially those for combat) for the John Carter of Mars – The Roleplaying Game are…smooth. Nothing feels forced, the lack of skills makes the game run really well as the GM tells the player the Difficulty of the task and what Attributes to use, though the GM and player can negotiate as desired over which Attributes should be used for a task. There were a couple of glitches that I encountered using the Quickstart rules (which are all I have until some time in March supposedly), but nothing that I couldn’t deal with/interpret for myself.

Had a good time, and it was nice to get some gaming in once more.

Getting Some Sunday Gaming In, Sort Of February 18, 2018

It’s Sunday morning, the Sunday of the long weekend (Family Day is tomorrow in certain parts of Canada).

While I won’t be gaming in the traditional sense today, as Tammy is on-call for her work, SteveR has decided that he wants to come out today and do some (play)testing and see how the game mechanics for the John Carter of Mars – The Roleplaying Game shape up and shake out. This is largely due to the fact that he’ll be running the Star Trek Adventures game from the same company, and wants to see what the basic game mechanics are like before he tries to run the game.

Should be an interesting afternoon, and I’m looking forward to getting some gaming in.

In the aftermath of the events of yesterday (see the blog entry about that, and no I’m not linking to it as the memory is too painful just now), I will not be gaming with the Friday gaming group this evening.

We’re all in a state of shock still somewhat, not to mention somewhat depressed and feeling down about the matter. I’m not sure when we’ll get back to gaming, or even if we’ll get back to gaming for that matter, but for now just… No.

That’s all I’ve got to say for this evening, folks.
