Today is National Fossil Day.

National Fossil Day is a celebration organized to promote public awareness and stewardship of fossils, as well as to foster a greater appreciation of their scientific and educational value.

So check out some fossils at some point today. And even if you couldn’t visit a museum or park this National Fossil Day, ancient creatures will be glad to see you whenever you can meet them at a museum or other venue of your choice.

Happy Thanksgiving Day, Canada!

Woke up to a relatively chilly day here in the Ottawa valley (around 11oC, about 51oF), actually weather that’s about normal for this time of year.

I want to wish all my Canadian friends a very good day, and one that is filled with all sorts of reasons for being thankful.

To honour this day, I thought I would just share a bit of Canadian music from Nova Scotia musician Melanie Doane…

To all my Canadian friends and peeps, here’s wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving. 🙂

Hope everyone is having a good day.

It’s the Labour Day weekend Monday here in Canada, so most folks are off work for the day.

While the week ahead likely to be a tough one, what with doctors’ appointments that I have scheduled and some other stuff going on, I’m planning on taking it relatively easy today and not going to stress out over anything if I can help it.

In any event, hope everyone has a good day. 🙂

Civic Holiday (Colonel By Day) Thoughts August 7, 2017

Monday, the civic holiday here in Canada. Colonel By Day, officially.

I’m feeling somewhat giddy after the gaming experience on the weekend, but am still hurting quite a lot in the left shoulder and the area of the various muscles that come off the shoulder. My exercises are helping somewhat, but stressing the body parts, I suspect. To make things worse, my allergies are driving me crazy, to be honest. I have no real plans for the day, other than to do a bit of laundry, since I need to start sorting out some of the clothes for this year’s GenCon Indy trip.

I’ve got three medical appointments the last four days of the week, so that should make life interesting this week as well.

A Crazy Week Ahead August 7, 2017

Even though it’s a civic holiday today, I’m up relatively early. Couldn’t sleep too much as my body is just hurting in various places. The left shoulder is particularly bad. The exercises seem to be helping, but the pain from them has made the condition much worse.

This week promises to be a bit of a bitch. Given mom’s current non-driver status and the fact taxis and the like are getting too expensive, I had planned to spend much of today searching for a new car, but discovered that all the car dealers are closed for the day (that civic holiday). This means that I’ll either have to do this tomorrow afternoon, or spend Thursday on this. I have a rough idea of what I’d like, but we’ll see how the expenses for the car shape up.

I’ve also got two physiotherapy appointments, one on Tuesday and the other Friday, and also have a Footcare appointment as well on Wednesday. In addition, I need to get a haircut this week, as my hair’s so long I’m starting to get a mullet. I don’t usually go this long without a haircut, but… In addition, I’m leaving for GenCon Indy a week Tuesday, and have got all sorts of things to purchase and start getting ready, so that’s another element to deal with.

Should be a crazy week.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish all my French and French-speaking friends and amis a very Happy Bastille Day! In France, it is known as La Fête Nationale (National Celebration) and commonly le quatorze juillet (the fourteenth of July).

Since French and U.S.A. independence are forever linked in history, celebrate Bastille Day with baguette, brie, and merlot!

Joyeux Fete Nationale, tous le monde! 🙂

Happy 4th of July!

I would like to wish all the folks in the United States of America, and all of my American LJ friends a very Happy Independence Day this Fourth of July.

This day is about enjoying life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, and I hope that each of you is doing so today, and every day, in your own way and with your own passion.

Enjoy the fireworks and other 4th of July celebrations. And remember, alcohol and fireworks don’t mix. Be safe, and be happy. 🙂

Canada Day Trivia July 1, 2017

In honour and celebration of Canada Day, I thought I would offer some trivia on things Canadian today:

“O Canada” was commissioned by Théodore Robitalle, the Lieutenant Governor of Québec, for Saint Jean Baptiste Day in 1880. While it has been sung since 1880, it wasn’t proclaimed Canada’s National Anthem until 1980.

The Canadian Flag was inaugurated on February 15th, 1965 at an official ceremony on Parliament Hill in Ottawa.

Queen Victoria selected Ottawa as the capital of Canada, then a province, in 1857.

Canada is a name derived from the Iroquois word “kanata”, meaning a “village” or “settlement”.

There are three oceans that touch Canada – the Atlantic on the east, the Pacific on the west, and the Arctic to the north.

The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms was included in the Constitution Act in 1982. Unlike the majority of democratic countries whose basic law derives from one document, Canada’s basic law derives not only from a set of documents known as Constitution Acts, but also a set of unwritten laws and conventions.

The name of the highest mountain in Canada is Mount Logan. However, having said that, on October 4, 2000, Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chrétien announced that Mount Logan would be renamed Mount Pierre Elliott Trudeau. After a public outcry against the idea, it was decided to keep the name Mount Logan. Sir William Edmond Logan was one of Canada’s greatest surveyors and scientists. Without getting political here, for many people the issue was not so much whether or not Trudeau deserved it, but more the importance of retaining the history of Canada which is too often forgotten.
