Thought I would start the week off by posting the link and video to one of my favourite flash mob bits, this one from a German mall. It’s in German, but I’ve included the translation of the sung song below.

ROCK ME
by
Voxxclub

Rock Me
When the Maypole stands in the village square again
And everything revolves around the girls
When they wear their hot traditional dresses
And we guys are rubbing our eyes

Here we go, now it’s that time again
Here we go, today nothing is regretted

Chorus
Come, show me a bit more
I want to know a bit more
Rock me tonight
Dance a little shuffle
Or whatever you prefer
Rock me tonight
Look me in the eyes, little one,
you are really fine
Rock me tonight
Twirl around and twirl around
Until the dance floor crashes

And now the night really begins
Every girl grabs herself a guy, yes
Then the feeling of insanity heats up in us
Because everybody wants to know

Here we go, now it’s that time again
Here we go, today nothing is regretted

Chorus (2x)

Happy Birthday to Thea Gilmore!! A wonderful musician with a style and feel to her music that is both interesting, fresh, and lyrically gorgeous.

And she’s also got a Christmas album, Strange Communion, which is now one of my favourite Christmas albums.

Happy Thanksgiving Day, Canada!

Woke up to a relatively chilly day here in the Ottawa valley (around 11oC, about 51oF), actually weather that’s about normal for this time of year.

I want to wish all my Canadian friends a very good day, and one that is filled with all sorts of reasons for being thankful.

To honour this day, I thought I would just share a bit of Canadian music from Nova Scotia musician Melanie Doane…

To all my Canadian friends and peeps, here’s wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving. 🙂

Happy Birthday, Ian Anderson! 🙂

Ian Anderson, the lead singer of the British progressive rock group Jethro Tull, celebrates his 69th birthday today. I have long been a fan of Jethro Tull and Ian Anderson’s solo work, and am delighted that Ian is celebrating another birthday.

::singing::
Happy Birthday to you,
Happy Birthday to you,
Happy Birthday, dear Ian,
Happy Birthday to you!
::stop singing::

Best wishes, Ian. 🙂

Oh, and for those who want to learn more about Ian’s work and Jethro Tull, just follow the link. 🙂

One of my favourite music tracks from Men At Work is the song “Land Down Under”.

Thought I’d share three of my favourite videos of the song. The first is the original song by Men At Work.

The flute work is just amazing on the song.

Here’s another version with an…alternate version to the flute, with the lovely Cecilia Noel.

Different, to be sure.

Finally, here’s my favourite version live with an older Colin Hay and a marvellous flautist, Gina Luciani. Not as perfect as the original band’s flautist, Greg Ham, but damn near close.

Any way you look at it, great, fun song! 🙂

Happy Birthday, Kate Bush!

One of my favourite musicians of all-time, Kate Bush, celebrates her birthday today!

I first started listening to the music of Kate Bush back in 1978 or 1979, with her first album, The Kick Inside (1978), a brilliant progressive rock album, with tracks such as “Wuthering Heights”, “James and the Cold Gun”, “Oh, To Be in Love”, “Them Heavy People” (a track I adore), and the title track. I can’t explain what it was about the album and her voice that made me fall for the singer and want to hear more of her work. The follow-up album, Lionheart (1978) (though I don’t think I heard this album until a year later, being in Canada as I was), was…remarkable, superb, and even better than her first one. “Symphony in Blue”, “In Search of Peter Pan”, “Kashka From Baghdad”, “Coffee Homeground” still resonate with me.

Anyway, I’ve been listening to Kate’s music since she started, and am still a huge fan. I was also lucky enough to see her in concert back in the mid-1980s, and she is even better live. Enough already.

Here’s wishing Kate Bush a very Happy Birthday! May she have a healthy, happy, prosperous, and blessed year ahead, and may a warm breeze always blow at her back.

Terribly sad news in the music industry. (Heard about it a couple of hours after yesterday.)

Rock ‘n roll musician and legend Chuck Berry has died. 😦

Rock ‘n Roll Legend Chuck Berry Dies at 90

Chuck Berry, Rock ‘n’ Roll Pioneer, Dead at 90

I’ve been listening to rock ‘n roll for most of my life, to be honest, and this news was both saddening and shocking to me for various reasons that I’m not going into here. Chuck Berry was one of, if not, rock’s greatest practitioners, guitarists, and the best pure rock ‘n roll writer who ever lived. He’s going to be sorely missed.

Here’s the iconic song from 1958.

*sigh*
