Spent last night gaming with the Friday night group, and had a pretty good time of it.

The Friday night gaming group arrived around 7:00 pm (including Ellie, who had decided she missed gaming a bit, and wanted to play), and we sat around and chatted for about 10 minutes about the week that was and Real Life(tm). The group discussed what they wanted to play, and agreed that they could wait on roleplaying games a bit, so we discussed what games to play in the board game variety.

The group decided to start with a couple of games of The Great Dinosaur Rush. This is a game that I really like, but haven’t played in a bit. In the first game, the scores were as follows.

KathyB/Ellie 93
Angela 110
DavidM 89
Mark 92
JohnK 98

It was a very close game for the longest time, right up until the final Turn, and Angela leapt in front with a really neat dinosaur design, and I…fell short on my dinosaur design and didn’t score enough points. Still, a fun game.

The second game was a lot of fun, too. The scores in that game were:

Kathy 90
Angela 94
DavidM 100
Mark/Ellie 103
JohnK 92

Another fun game, and even closer score-wise than the first game had been. Mark/Ellie and DavidM went right down to the wire with this one, the final Turn proving to be DavidM’s downfall, as Kathy and I snagged a few points and managed to break the 90-point mark. Some interesting dinosaur designs in this one, too.

The final game of the night was Pandemic, and this one, was as usual, a nail biter of a game. It was unclear right up until the evening’s end as to whether we’d beat the various plagues or not, and I thought we did pretty wel. I played the Scientist, and we managed to contain the Red and Yellow plagues, eliminated the Blue plague, but were decimated when the Black plague spread outward from Moscow. It was a fun, if nerve wracking, game and I was pleased when with about two cards left in the Deck we were able to wipe out the fourth plague and win the game.

Overall, a fun evening of board gaming and some good camaraderie. Looking forward to gaming next Friday night. 🙂

Some More The Great Dinosaur Rush on a Friday Night October 22, 2016

As noted in the blog yesterday, I managed to game with the Friday night gamers last night. Since the Halloween scenario for the Chill 3rd Edition RPG that I’m working on isn’t ready yet, it was decided that we would play some board games last night.

The players showed up around 7:05 pm or so, give or take 10 minutes, and we spent some time catching up on the week and discussing American politics. After that, we had some tea, and got down to gaming for the night. The players decided that they had enjoyed it so much last week, that we’d play a couple or three games of The Great Dinosaur Rush. So we dug the game out, and started setting up. Since everyone had played the game before, I didn’t have to explain the rules to the players, and we just got into the game for the evening. I didn’t take any pictures of the game board last night, or of any of the dinosaurs built, but it was a pretty fun evening overall.

In the first game, the scores were:

KathyB/Ellie 120
Angela 114
DavidM 91
Mark 91
JohnK 100

It was a very close, tight game all the way through until the final Turn, and even then Angela and KathyB/Ellie were in doubt as to which of them would win. I finished with the most Notoriety Points, so that cost me a shot at winning the game, but it was still good fun. Mark created the most fun dinosaur of the night, nicknamed Wall-Esaurus for his resemblance to a certain movie character. 🙂

The second game was a pretty good match, and the scores were:

Kathy 89
Angela 92
DavidM 102
Mark/Ellie 104
JohnK 91

The scores in this game were pretty tight, DavidM seemingly having the win sewn up until Mark/Ellie managed to get rid of their Notoriety Points in the last Action phase and earned themselves the win. I had a rough third Turn, and couldn’t get the bone colours that I needed, and failed to complete two of my Dinosaur Bonus cards. But you do what you can. *sigh*

The third game was probably my best game of the night. Ellie fell asleep, so after KathyB tucked her in for a while in my bed, we played a third game for the night, with the scores as follows:

KathyB 101
Angela 96
DavidM 100
Mark 114
JohnK 108

A fun game, with a very tight scoring total for the night. Mark beat me by 6 points, and the only reason Angela came in last was because she had the highest Notoriety Points on the play. I managed to complete three Dinosaur Bonus cards for the night, and had a pretty good run of it.

Overall, it was a fun night of playing The Great Dinosaur Rush, and the Friday night gamers and I had a marvellous time of it. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves, and we broke up about 11:10 pm after having a bit of tea to wrap up the night (except Ellie, of course, who was sound asleep by this time).

Looking forward to gaming next Friday night. No idea what will be in store, yet.

A Great Dinosaur Rush Board Game Wednesday Night October 20, 2016

Spent a good, fun evening with the Wednesday night gaming group last night.

The players showed up around 7:00 pm or so, give or take 10 minutes, and we spent a bit of time catching up with each other, and then got down to board gaming for the evening. Donna and DavidW were quite hyped about playing some games of The Great Dinosaur Rush from APE Games, after having checked out the website, and so that’s what we decided to do.

After setting up The Great Dinosaur Rush board game on my dining room table, I talked to the players about the game rules, showed them a basic example of building a dinosaur, and then we got into the first game. Unfortunately, I didn’t take any pictures of the game board or any of the dinosaurs built during the game, but it was a fun night for the five of us (Donna, DavidW, Kendall, Crystal, and myself) and both plays of the game were enjoyable.

The scores for the first game were:

Donna 101
DavidW 83
Kendall 98
Crystal 93
JohnK 94

It was a very close, veery tight game all the way through, with scoring on the last turn influenced by the Notoriety Points (Kendall would have won the game, except for the fact that she had 8 points). I played a pretty decent first game, and thought that I did all right for myself, although during the 2nd Turn I almost forgot to give my dinosaur some ribs during the Build Phase! Silly me! 🙂

The second game was interesting as well.

Donna 93
DavidW 102
Kendall 101
Crystal 95
JohnK 96

Again, it was an interesting game, and one that had the scores flip-flop a little bit near the end of the game on the final Exhibit Phase with some truly nice dinosaur Builds (Donna actually scoring 3 Dinosaur Bonus cards!). I scored a total of 15 points in cards as well on the final Exhibit Phase, but for a while I wasn’t sure that I would have the Limb and Neck bones to make the second card during that play.

Overall, it was a fun evening of playing The Great Dinosaur Rush, and the four players agreed that it’s a game that we’ll be playing again in future as well.

Getting ready for this evening’s gaming session with the Wednesday night group.

We won’t be doing any roleplaying game stuff this evening, as the four players are quite eager to do a bit of boardgaming. So I’ll be playing a game or two with them of APE Games‘s The Great Dinosaur Rush. I don’t promise any photos tonight, but we’ll see what we shall see.

In the meantime, I need to get upstairs and make some supper. Stir fry, I think, with a bit of rice. And a side salad, of course. 🙂

Have a good night, folks.

Sunday Afternoon at the Dig Site (Gaming Post) October 17, 2016

Yesterday afternoon, I spent a rather pleasant session of gaming with the Sunday gaming group.

Since I wasn’t feeling up to running a roleplaying game, it was decided that we would play some board games, although I had specific plans. hehe

Once the Sunday gaming group showed up, Tammy, and I decided that we’d take the new game that I received, The Great Dinosaur Rush from APE Games, for a play. It was a good decision, and a fun afternoon of gaming. We set up the board game on the table, and got ready to play as I explained the basic rules of the game to the players.

I’m not going to go into the rules here – you can read about them over on the APE Games website – but they’re quite simple, though the most complex (and fun!) part of the game is dinosaur building to mark the close of each game Turn. Suffice it to say that we played a couple of games, and had loads of fun. Here’s some photos that I took during the course of the games. (Sorry for the occasional blurry photo here.)

A humanoid dinosaur, sort of. Or maybe an alien:

One of SteveR’s mistakes early in the first game. An attempt at Monosaurus. He forgot that each dinosaur built had to have two limbs (the red bones):

My first dinosaur build of the game. Rather nice, but a bit wonky in the limbs area:

Here’s the game board near the end of the first Game Turn. Lots of dinosaur bones claimed during the Turn, and the Publicity of the museums got a good workout. :):

A fishy kind of dinosaur, don’t you think:

A winged dinosaur or bird/reptile thing, though I’m not sure it’s by the book and adheres to the dinosaur building rules. Still, fun:

And last, my favourite beastie of the afternoon, Hopalongasaurus!:

There were a couple of glitches with the rules that we had, but those will be easily resolved with the help of the folks at <a href="APE Games. Nothing that interfered with our enjoyment of the game, though.

Oh, and for the record… Tammy won the first game with a wide margin, at 134 points, while I came in second with a somewhat distant 114 points, and SteveR finished with a respectable 93 points. The second game was much tighter, SteveR winning out with a score of 99, Tammy finishing second with a score of 88, and I finished with a tally of 82.

Still, as I said, a really fun and enjoyable afternoon of board gaming and a relaxing time as well. <a href="APE Games has a real winner on their hands with The Great Dinosaur Rush. I’m looking forward to playing many more games of this one!

Oh, and for the (second) record… I *looooooooooooooooovvvvve* meeples! 🙂
