Getting ready for Friday night gaming.

To be honest, I’m looking forward to gaming this evening with the Friday night group. They’ll be continuing on with the Torg Eternity campaign set in the Living Land that we started some five sessions ago. All the players will be here this evening, so I’m looking forward to the game tonight.

I’ve been so buried in editing stuff for a game that I can’t talk about this week that I’m a little burnt out from it all. Gaming Torg Eternity will give me back some of “balance” that I get from running games while editing other stuff. In the meantime, I need to get upstairs and make (something) for supper for the night.

Have a good evening, folks. 🙂

Given that it’s April 1st, and we all know what that means, I thought I would share this with you. Jean Wells Rogers, a long-time reader of the “Dear Abby” columns in the newspaper, wrote this wonderful poem for today. Fitting, don’t you think?

APRIL 1

No one goes hungry
All people are fed
The oceans are clean
Lake Erie’s not dead.

The Irish aren’t fighting
The Arabs love Jews
The swords are now plowshares
Now ain’t that good news?

The water’s delicious
The air is so clear
On top of a mountain
You see to next year.

Couples stay married
Children are jewels
Sure got you going!

APRIL FOOLS!

Happy Birthday, Ursula K. Le Guin! October 21, 2017

Today is the birthday of one of my favourite writers of all-time, Ursula K. Le Guin.

Many of us who read science fiction and fantasy were likely influenced by her early writings, such as the Earthsea trilogy, and the Hainish series (including The Left Hand of Darkness), and I am staggered by the sheer amount of material that she has written over the years and which I have in my possession. And honoured to own.

While I began with Asimov, Tolkien, and some of the other great writers who dominated the late 1950s (as my dad felt that I should read the sf and f that was written during the decade of my birth and before), it was the words and prose of Le Guin’s writing that gave me my love of social science fiction, and introduced me to the social sciences in such a terrific fashion.

Happy Birthday, UKL!! May the Goddess bless you with health, happiness, prosperity, and the ability to keep us entertained with enjoyable, thought-provoking books and short stories for many years to come! 🙂

Spent a relatively quiet day yesterday (Tuesday), just trying to stay out of the heat and not stressing out my body and all.

The afternoon was pretty quiet, for the most part.

I did a little bit of work on an idea I have for an adventure for the Torg: Eternity RPG, as it’s something that came to me over the last few days and all. Just the basics are written down for now, and I’ll let the adventure idea percolate a little, and see what comes of it. Definitely going to take place in the Living Land, and possibly one other Realm on Earth as well.

After a couple of hours work on the adventure idea, I decided that I wanted to test run the creation system for another couple of Storm Knights, and did some more of that. By the time I was finished, I had the following Storm Knight characters done up.

Noble Barbarian (Aysle)
Crusading Preacher (Orrorsh)
Victorian Sniper (Orrorsh)
Edeinos Healer (Living Land)

I had a lot of fun creating these, and to be honest, surprised myself with how quickly I was able to create the Storm Knight characters and see what the system offers. I’m really looking forward to running Torg: Eternity, and hope I get a chance to play the game as well.

Aside from it being my birthday, today has been a very strange day.

I woke up this morning, and realised it was late (around 8:30 am) but that I didn’t have to go to work today. As of Saturday, July 1st, I’m retired.

I’m not going to say all that much here, other than to add that I’m going to take some time off thinking about working again (other than the freelance rpg editing that I do), but will see what I want to do with my life, maybe volunteer or go to work in a bookstore or something, after GenCon 2017 (assuming that I go, since no idea what will happen with my shoulder before then).

For now, just taking it easy.

How I Spent My Christmas Day December 26, 2016

Yesterday was Christmas Day. Being a single fellow, with little family left in the world, ’twas a day where I got to spend much of it on my own.

I woke up to find that my leg pain had diminished somewhat overnight, and that I was comfortably toasty in bed. I decided to lay in a bit longer, since there was no gaming for the day (and even if there had been, I wouldn’t be running it so there! 😛 ), and when I did get up, I headed upstairs for breakfast.

Had a nice breakfast of croissants and café au lait, and then went back to bed for a bit, and snoozed. Got up and jotted down an idea or two for a couple of Coriolis – The Third Horizon RPG scenarios, and then made some notes in the margins about them. Quite pleased with myself about this material, but we’ll see how it shapes up after the game actually comes out. I did a bit of reading before showering, and then had a relatively early lunch.

After lunch, I did a bit of vacuuming in the bedroom and the living room, and then relaxed and took another nap. Then it was time to watch the second disc of the 3rd season of Rizzoli & Isles, and rather enjoyed that.

I had myself a healthy meal for supper, consisting of roast chicken, a salad, some cooked snow peas, and lentils with cumin and onion. Yummy! For dessert, I had a couple of latkes (a Hanukkah tradition) with some apple sauce and drizzled honey. Even Yummier! 🙂 After cleaning the dishes away, I sat back and watched the evening’s new episode of The Librarians, followed by the Doctor Who Christmas special, “The Return of Doctor Mysterio”. It was a fun, light-hearted episode, that wasn’t Christmas-y at all, had a lot of nods to the superhero genre, and was a terrific Peter Capaldi outing.

I wrapped up the evening with my nightly insulin shot, and then went to bed and did some more reading before falling asleep.

Friday Morning Thoughts…Brrrrr!!! December 16, 2016

Friday morning.

Last day of the work week, and the Friday before the Christmas weekend. It’s a brutally cold day here in the Ottawa valley. As I write this, the temperature outside is a frigid -24oC (that’s -11.2oF for my American friends), and that’s without the wind chill factor.

To add insult to injury, there’s been a problem with the heating system here at work for the last day or so, and I’m sitting here at my desk wearing a sweater and my indoors hoodie. And have already had a hot cup of cinnamon tea already here at the office.

There’s almost no one here today at the office, only around 6 to 10 of my fellow workers, and the Christmas party is at noon today. Should be interesting, to be sure.

The weather forecast for the weekend is pretty dreadful, with a lot of snow and freezing rain over the course of Saturday and Sunday, so I’m not sure how much gaming I’ll be getting in this weekend. That said, I’ve got some stuff I’m working on for the Continuum: Roleplaying in the Yet RPG campaign that I’m running on Wednesday nights, there’s some editing that I’m doing (though I hope for the weekend off from that), and I’m supposed to game with the Friday night group tonight.

Here’s hoping for a calm, relaxed weekend. 🙂

A Gaming Thought December 5, 2016

After having gotten to play in DavidM’s game on Friday nights and SteveR’s game on Sunday afternoons a little bit now, I wish to offer these two thoughts.

1. My writing speed has slowed down somewhat.

2. When I try to write notes fast, my writing becomes messy and at times illegible. Even to me.

Yes, I know I’ve not blogged a great deal the last few days.

Truth be told, I’ve been busy doing other things – watching some DVDs, working on some game material that I’m writing up for the Polaris RPG, and editing a game manuscript (that I can’t talk about).

In the meantime, work goes on as usual, my left leg and ankle continue to hurt a lot, and I’ve got my regularly scheduled footcare appointment this afternoon.

Take care, everyone.

Woke up this morning with a bit of a headache. Nothing unusual these days, but I’m hoping that it goes away before the afternoon.

Had a relatively quiet day doing a bit of reading, doing a bit of editing on a roleplaying game manuscript that I can’t talk about, and some work on a scenario idea for one of the rpgs that I’ll be running soon.

Looking forward to gaming with the Sunday group this afternoon. They’ll be creating characters for the Polaris RPG, so we’ll see how that goes.
