Happy Birthday, Matt! πŸ™‚

Today is the birthday of Matthew McFarland, one of the nicest people in the gaming industry that you’re likely to meet.

Also known as “BlackHat Matt”, Matt works as a speech-language pathologist during the day, but has been writing and developing roleplaying games professionally since 1998. He’s got a lot of rpg writing and assorted work under his belt, but is currently a founder of the company Growling Door Games
and has just released the Monsters Sourcebook for the Chill 3rd Edition RPG.

May the Goddess bless you with happiness, health, prosperity, and good cheer for the coming year. May you always have a warm breeze at your back. And may the next year also be a Chilly one as well. πŸ™‚

Here’s hoping you have a terrific birthday, Matt! πŸ™‚

Happy Birthday, Ian Anderson! πŸ™‚

Ian Anderson, the lead singer of the British progressive rock group Jethro Tull, celebrates his 69th birthday today. I have long been a fan of Jethro Tull and Ian Anderson’s solo work, and am delighted that Ian is celebrating another birthday.

::singing::
Happy Birthday to you,
Happy Birthday to you,

::stop singing::

Best wishes, Ian. πŸ™‚

Happy Birthday, Abigail Spencer!

It’s Abigail Spencer’s birthday today. The talented actress who was born in Florida turns 36 years old today.

I’m a huge fan of Abigail’s portrayal of Lucy Preston on the Timeless tv series (which will be back for a second, or is it a third season?, hooray!), but also know her from her work on Rectify (fabulous show, go watch it!), Suits and Mad Men. And she’ll be appearing in a multi-episode story arc this fall on Grey’s Anatomy, in addition to her continuing work on Timeless.

Here’s wishing Abigail Spencer a wonderful birthday. May the Goddess bless you with good health, happiness, prosperity, and a long run on Timeless! πŸ™‚

Happy Birthday, Kate Bush!

One of my favourite musicians of all-time, Kate Bush, celebrates her birthday today!

I first started listening to the music of Kate Bush back in 1978 or 1979, with her first album, The Kick Inside (1978), a brilliant progressive rock album, with tracks such as “Wuthering Heights”, “James and the Cold Gun”, “Oh, To Be in Love”, “Them Heavy People” (a track I adore), and the title track. I can’t explain what it was about the album and her voice that made me fall for the singer and want to hear more of her work. The follow-up album, Lionheart (1978) (though I don’t think I heard this album until a year later, being in Canada as I was), was…remarkable, superb, and even better than her first one. “Symphony in Blue”, “In Search of Peter Pan”, “Kashka From Baghdad”, “Coffee Homeground” still resonate with me.

Anyway, I’ve been listening to Kate’s music since she started, and am still a huge fan. I was also lucky enough to see her in concert back in the mid-1980s, and she is even better live. Enough already.

Here’s wishing Kate Bush a very Happy Birthday! May she have a healthy, happy, prosperous, and blessed year ahead, and may a warm breeze always blow at her back.

Aside from it being my birthday, today has been a very strange day.

I woke up this morning, and realised it was late (around 8:30 am) but that I didn’t have to go to work today. As of Saturday, July 1st, I’m retired.

I’m not going to say all that much here, other than to add that I’m going to take some time off thinking about working again (other than the freelance rpg editing that I do), but will see what I want to do with my life, maybe volunteer or go to work in a bookstore or something, after GenCon 2017 (assuming that I go, since no idea what will happen with my shoulder before then).

For now, just taking it easy.

Well, today is my birthday. I’m not embarrassed about my age; I turn 62 years old today. No real motto for today, but I do feel that it’s gotta be a better year than the previous one was. πŸ™‚ (But isn’t that always the case?) In a lot of ways, the previous year was one that had some good times, bad times, and saw a few health problems crop up. But like I said, there were some great moments scattered among the rough patches. I like to think that I am a bit better of a person for it and all. The year saw various ups and downs in my life, but *that is life*. That’s how it works.

So, what was 1955 like? Well, a lot of stuff happened in 1955.

The Wikipedia page on events in 1955 gives a good account of what happened during the year.

It was a terrific year for books as well, as evidenced by this list of Most Popular Books of 1955 found on the Goodreads site. So many great titles published during that year. No wonder I turned out to be an avid reader! πŸ™‚

For some of the musical stuff that was going on back in 1955, check out this good link.

Some of the movies from that year include Bad Day at Black Rock directed by John Sturges, The Blackboard Jungle directed by Richard Brooks, East of Eden directed by Elia Kazan, one of my favourite films of all-time, Kiss Me Deadly directed by Robert Aldrich, Disney’s Lady and the Tramp, The Night of the Hunter directed by Charles Laughton, Rebel Without a Cause directed by Nicholas Ray, The Rose Tattoo directed by Daniel Mann, The Seven Year Itch directed by Billy Wilder, and of course, To Catch a Thief directed by Alfred Hitchcock, to name but a few.

Lots of good stuff the year of my birth.

I’m not planning on doing anything special to celebrate my birthday this year, although I’ll be spending some time (hopefully) with friends and family. I’ll likely go out to dinner tonight somewhere, but the extent of my celebrating will involve a bit of Chinese food (maybe) and some (more) Black Forest cake. No Bailey’s Irish Cream or other alcohol any more, sad to say. So I’m not going to indulge too much. (Besides, if I can’t have a bit of cake or whatever on my birthday, when can I, I ask you?)

Anyway, I hope that I’m a better person in the coming year, and I hope that I get a bit of happiness, good health, peace and prosperity for the coming year as well. Oh, and some love or romance would be nice, too. πŸ™‚

Today is the birthday of Laila Rouass, one of my favourite British actresses of the current day.

Born of Moroccan and Indian parents, Laila’s been making a lot of tv and stuff – Footballers’ Wives, roles in British soaps Family Affairs and Hollyoaks, the ninth series of Spooks, the Holby City series, The Royals series, and most recently Stella. She also has a good resumΓ© in the movies, making films that have strong messages and meanings. Of course, I am fondest of her as Dr. Sarah Page in the Primeval tv series.

While I understand her reasons for leaving the Primeval tv series, I still love her as an actress, and watch her appearances in tv and film whenever I can.

Happy Birthday, Laila! Hope you are having a marvellous birthday today, and that you have a terrific year ahead of you!
