Folks should not forget that today we celebrate Earth Hour.

Tonight’s the night that we switch off the lights between 8:30 pm and 9:30 pm.

Earth Hour is designed to raise awareness of climate change, and was initiated by the World Wildlife Fund in Sydney, Australia in 2007. It is observed by at least 4,000 cities in 88 countries of the world (including the city of Ottawa).

So, remember, turn off the lights for an hour tonight and honour Earth Hour.

Good morning, everyone!

Today is the first day of Spring. Not sure what the weather is going to be like today (haven’t checked the forecast yet), but I’m hoping for a nice day. This is Ottawa, so one expects whatever weather one expects. 🙂

I just want to wish everyone a very good, very happy First Day of Spring!

Hope the weather wherever you are is balmy, the skies are clear, and that you get outside and spend the day in the fresh, Spring air!

Happy International Women’s Day!

(For more information on this day, check out the Wikipedia page as well.)

Now go and tell all your favourite girls (be they friends, lovers, spouses, or whatever) how much you love, adore, and respect them.

So, go on. What are you waiting for? 🙂

And just as an example, and a reason for celebration, I give you:

Happy Birthday, Legion of Super-Heroes!

Sixty (60) years ago today, February 27th, 1958, Adventure Comics #247, the first issue of a DC Comics title to introduce the Legion of Super-Heroes, was published in April of that year. (That’s the date I’m sticking with.)

Happy Birthday, Legion! May you live forever in the pages of DC Comics in some form or other, but in the meantime, may you have a happy return (double entendre intended)!

Happy Winter Solstice!

There’s good news, and bad news. The good news is that the days start to get longer as of today! The bad news is that it’s been a pretty snowy, not all that mild winter so far, so I suspect this year that winter is just getting started on us, and there’s going to be a lot snow and cold temperatures this year1. But one takes the good with the bad. 🙂

Winter weather. Bah, humbug!

1 But we don’t need to be worried about climate and environmental change! Right!!!

Today is the first day of Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights that is usually around much earlier in the month than Christmas, and lasts a bit longer than Christmas does. Well, actually Hanukkah begins at sundown, so we’re all good.

I want to wish everyone out there a very Happy Hanukkah.

The gifts I would like this year aren’t really all that complicated. Well, most of them anyway. First off, a year (relatively) free of illness. Second, a year free of shoulder/back/neck/arm/hand pain (caused most likely by the problems with my cervical spine) and foot pain (caused by whatever). Third, for my diabetes management to be under better control. For life to be less stressful for the most part. And finally, for peace on earth, and an end to war.

So Chag Sameach to all my Jewish friends, and enjoy the Festival of Lights for this year!

Today, we celebrate Ada Lovelace Day.

It is actually a celebration of all women in all fields of science.

I’m very glad there’s a site like Trowelblazers, that reminds us of all the brilliant women in archaeology, palaeontology, and geology.

Today is National Fossil Day.

National Fossil Day is a celebration organized to promote public awareness and stewardship of fossils, as well as to foster a greater appreciation of their scientific and educational value.

So check out some fossils at some point today. And even if you couldn’t visit a museum or park this National Fossil Day, ancient creatures will be glad to see you whenever you can meet them at a museum or other venue of your choice.
