Gaming is off for this afternoon with the Sunday group.

While Tammy is free to game this weekend and SteveR is eager to continue running the Star Trek Adventures campaign this afternoon, I am just too ill.

This is the usual illness that I get during the end of September and the beginning of October, and I’ve got it full force right now. Head blocked, sinuses clogged, snot running out of my nose (and even eyes), bad hacking cough, chest pain, swollen lymph nodes, and to top it off I’ve lost my voice (yeah, I know some folks will be happy about that last bit!). Blah.

Anyway, no gaming for the day. And I’ll be off the computer for the rest of the day. Going to lie down with copious liquids, both hot and cold, and watch some DVD and pvr materials. Either that, or try and sleep.

*cough, cough*

Wednesday Gaming Group Demise September 26, 2018

In sad gaming news…

I would have been gaming with the Wednesday night gaming group this evening, but such is not to be. It is with deep regret that I have to announce the dissolution of the Wednesday night gaming group. For various reasons, all of which make sense to me as well, the Wednesday night players (DonnaW, DavidW, Kendall, and Crystal) have decided to no longer game.

While the folks in question have enjoyed their time gaming with me, the primary reason for the stoppage of gaming is time constraints and Real Life(tm) stuff. DavidW and DonnaW told me that they still have an interest in gaming, and may get back to it at some point in the future (possibly within the next month or two at the earliest), but otherwise, the Wednesday night gaming group is no more.

I just want to thank DavidW, DonnaW, Kendall and Crystal for taking the time to actually game and for the gaming memories that we made during the time that I got to play with them. I will miss the Wednesday night players and the time I spent with them a lot, but understand why this decision had to be made. The four are still friends, good friends, and I hope to keep in touch with the without the “excuse” of gaming being there, and look forward to seeing what the future brings.

In the meantime, onwards with Real Life(tm) stuff for the day.

The Start of September, A New Month September 1, 2018

It’s the start of September. A new month.

I’m really glad to see the back end of August. While there were a few good things that happened in August, notably gaming-wise, most of August was miserable for me and the end of the month was particularly bad with more bad news health-wise.

While the beginning of September hasn’t been all that much fun, given the heat and humidity today so far, I’m really hoping that September is a good month for me and that I get a chance to do some gaming, some reading, and that my feet and legs get a chance to rest and perhaps start to feel better. On the shoulder front, that’s just a matter of seeing what the physiotherapy does for me.

In the meantime, I’ve spent the afternoon out grocery shopping (though I also bought a set of bed sheets today), and have just taken care of and sent off a contract for a new rpg job that will challenge me for the month.

No gaming last night with the Friday group as it’s their week off, and tomorrow promises to be interesting as SteveR has Tammy and me finish up our player characters for his Star Trek Adventures game. Should be interesting.

RPGaDay in August – August 31st: Why Do I Take Part in #RPGaDay? August 31, 2018

We wrap up #RPGaDay in August for 2018.

Day 31 – Share why you take part in RPGaDay?

I hadn’t really thought about this before, but…

I take part in #RPGaDay for two reasons. Firstly, I answer the questions to the best of my ability because I often learn something about myself and my gaming habits and the like. Secondly, I do the #RPGaDay in August thing because I like learning about other gamers and those who share my rpg interests, and it seems only fair that I reciprocate. 🙂

Can’t wait to do it all again next year! 🙂

Day 30 – Share something you learned about playing your character.

I think I’ve learned two really important things about playing my character, both from the pov of a player and that of a GM. First and foremost, I’ve learned that the characters I play need to have a strong motivation and set of goals (even if those will change over time) so as to give the character a frame of reference as well as a clear motivation. Secondly, I’ve learned that the characters I play (especially when I’m a player) have to work with the other player characters and have some element of personality that allows them to be somewhat gregarious. When GMing, this is less important of course, but the social quotient (as I like to call it) for NPCs and people the player characters in my games will meet can be an important factor.

Day 29 – Share a friendship you have because of RPGs.

This one is actually quite easy, but I could give multiple answers to this one.

One friendship that I have is due to RPGs for certain. I first met Steven Ross at the local gaming store in Ottawa sometime back in the early 1980s. We’ve been friends ever since, though we share more than just an interest in rpgs. ‘Nuff said.

My GenCon Haul (Sort of) and New Dice August 28, 2018

Thought I should mention that my haul of GenCon 2018 arrived in snail mail a couple of days ago. My friend, T.R. Knight, picked the stuff up for me at the convention, and I owe him my thanks for that. (He’s already been paid for the goods, and the shipping to Canada (the latter was absolutely vicious and ridiculous, but that’s the way shipping to Canada is these days).)

There are a couple of extra sets of Torg Eternity dice in that haul, and the copy of Capharnaüm – The Tales of the Dragon-Marked is signed by Sarah Newton. 🙂

In addition, today a set of ten 20-sided dice arrived in the snail mail as well.

While I have plenty of old, standard d20s lying around in my various bags and margarine containers of dice, I realised that if I’m going to run and play some of the Modiphius 2d20 Momentum game systems, I wanted a separate batch of those dice (since you need up to 5 d20s). So this was a good buy for a few bucks.

Day 28 – Share whose inspiring game excellence you’re grateful for.

Difficult question for me.

I would have to say that the person who’s game excellence I admire and am grateful for the most is Robin D. Laws. Robin has done a lot of work on various games and is an active podcaster as well. Robin’s stuff is just superb, and he really gets into the underpinnings of rpg design, play, and GMing. And his writing is superb!

‘Nuff said.

Day 27 – Share a great stream/actual play.

Hmm…

One of the actual play streams that I’ve been rather enjoying of late is the Ulisses Spiele North America feeds of some Torg Eternity RPG actual play. Here’s the start of the latest one, a 6-part live play of the “God Box” scenario set in the Living Land. Enjoy! 🙂

Terraforming Mars on a Sunday Afternoon August 26, 2018

Well, as mentioned earlier today, Tammy wasn’t able to make it for gaming as she was on-call again for work, so SteveR and I had arranged that we’d play another game of Terraforming Mars again today.

Terraforming_Mars-cover.jpg

Once SteveR arrived at my house, we sat down and set up the game for play. I tried a variant of the game, in that I wanted to get ready to play with a named corporation, so rather than play the Beginner Corporation game as stated, we started with 4 Project cards that had to be bought for the regular price, rather than the 10 cards that we got for free. It made for a decent game, to be sure, and was much closer to a regular game than a beginner game.

As you can see from the two pictures above, I got off to a slow start, and by the end of the 3rd Generation, the score for Victory Points was still pretty tight, but I was losing. The Project cards in my hands were all pretty expensive ones, there was no pattern that I could discern in the cards (like I said, I’m still relatively new at playing this game), though I’d already put a city on the gamp as well as two Greeneries.

By the end of Generation 11, I needn’t have worried. Not only had SteveR and I terraformed Mars, but I pulled out a 63 to 57 point victory in the game. It was all the green tiles that I had around my cities that made the difference, and to be honest, the game was a close one all the way through. That said, the important part was that we terraformed Mars! This was the first time since I’ve played the game that we accomplished that feat before we had to stop gaming for the day, so I’m really pleased about that result.

Terraforming Mars is such a fun game, even at this still early stage of playing the game for me. I love the decisions that have to be made, I love the way things turn out, and I love how the game plays. It doesn’t feel competitive to me, even though it does have quite a few (conflict) elements to it, but it has a large, cooperative overview that one has to see. It’s a game that I really like, and I don’t see myself getting tired of it. Not that I get to play it as often as I like, but who knows what the future holds? Definitely play this board game if you get the chance. 🙂
