Aside from it being my birthday, today has been a very strange day.

I woke up this morning, and realised it was late (around 8:30 am) but that I didn’t have to go to work today. As of Saturday, July 1st, I’m retired.

I’m not going to say all that much here, other than to add that I’m going to take some time off thinking about working again (other than the freelance rpg editing that I do), but will see what I want to do with my life, maybe volunteer or go to work in a bookstore or something, after GenCon 2017 (assuming that I go, since no idea what will happen with my shoulder before then).

For now, just taking it easy.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I’ll be running some a couple of times, I’ll be running some Coriolis – The Third Horizon scenarios at this year’s GenCon Indy. Today, the initial gaming schedule for GenCon 50 will go on-line in about 15 minutes, and I was pleased to learn in an e-mail yesterday (Saturday) that the two games I’ll be running were finally confirmed as being on the schedule, so today potential players can sign up to play in the games.

So here’s the listings on the games that I’ll be running for those that might be interested. I don’t know how quickly the games will fill with players once the game registration process opens at the end of May, but if you’d like to play “Arabian Nights in space” with me, please consider adding the games to your wish list and signing up for them.

In any event, I’m looking forward to seeing folks at the convention. Hope to meet up with old friends, and make some new friends. Hope to see some of my LJ, WordPress and Twitter friends playing in the games. Oh, and I hope to do some gaming, of course! 🙂

As most folks know, today is Mother’s Day.

Due to various things going on for Mother’s Day in Tammy life, the Sunday gaming group will not be playing today.

I had been looking forward to playtesting “The Dixmude Affair” for the Primeval RPG that I’ll be running at CanGames in one week, but alas and alack, that will not happen today.

So I’m going to spend some time today doing Mother’s Day things, some reading, maybe watching some DVD and/or PVR stuff, and just having a nice quiet Sunday. Oh, and browsing through the initial schedule for GenCon 50 that will go on-line in just over half an hour.

Well, I’ve gone ahead and done it.

With the blessings of the folks at Fria Ligan/Free League Publishing, I will be running a couple of sessions of the Coriolis – The Third Horizon RPG at GenCon Indy this year in Indianapolis in August.

Since I’ve submitted the two games, I’ve got to wait for confirmation on both games, with dates and times, but for now I can say that I’ll be running one game (hopefully) at 2:00 pm on the Friday and the other game (hopefully) at 8:00 pm on Saturday night.

More information and details when stuff gets confirmed.

Hope to see some of my friends, both face-to-face and virtual, playing in the games when I run them at GenCon 50. 🙂

The Not Quite Fiasco of GenCon Housing Reservations February 13, 2017

As noted yesterday, the Housing reservation process for GenCon Indy 2017 opened and began. To say that I thought it was going to be a fiasco and that I would be stressed would be an understatement.

The Housing Portal opened at 12:00 noon yesterday, with every paid for registered member of the convention being randomly assigned a time within some time frame through the lottery method, after which their housing reservation could be made (or at least tried). I was disappointed on Saturday, when the messages with the randomly assigned times for hotel booking were issued, to see that I had a time that was at 6:37pm on Sunday. To be honest, in my experience with GenCon in the past, if you can’t book a hotel room in the first hour or so, you aren’t likely to get a room a) where you would want one (namely downtown Indianapolis). But I had no way of guessing what would happen.

I had already decided that, with the problems I’ve got with my feet (likely diabetes caused), I would attempt to try and book a Disability ADA compliant room for the convention this year. Rather than going through the on-line system, this process is done through a phone number that is provided on the GenCon website. When the Housing Portal countdown reached zero and allowed me to access the portal, I called the number in question…only to be greeted by an automated message that GenCon Housing was closed for the day, and that I should leave a mesage.

I’m not proud of what happened next. I stressed out totally and completely lost my cool. I left two messages on the line, spaced out by about twenty minutes, the first one being one that I regretted totally. I pretty much made myself feel ill as all heck, and truth be told, I thought that I’d not be going to GenCon at all this year. After the experience with the hotels for GenCon 2015, I vowed I wasn’t going to stay 40 minutes away (even if the Marriott North was a nice hotel), since I couldn’t deal with the sheer amount of walking that would be needed, the hassles of parking a car in downtown Indy, not to mention the inability to have a place to decompress and drop off stuff bought and the like. Not to mention the inability to eat diabetic snacks during the day. So I thought things had turned into another complete fiasco.

After I’d recorded the second, polite message (with an apology), it took me a while to regain my mental and physical equilibrium, I got a call from GenCon Housing! They had received both my messages, and the lady at the other end of the phone said that she understood why I’d lost my cool. Suffice it to say that we had a pleasant conversation and I was able to book a Disability ADA compliant room for the convention at the Westin Indianapolis. I couldn’t get the room booked for the whole of the desired stay in Indy (arriving on Tuesday, check-out on Monday), as they couldn’t give me the tail end day, but the nice lady assured me that it would be added to the reservation later on during the process, once other stuff happened.

So what could have been a terrible fiasco with GenCon Housing had a happy ending after all, though I have to say that the GenCon housing lottery is one of the worst systems I (and plenty of others) have ever experienced. As the convention grows, the problem seems to be getting worse. No, I don’t know what a good solution and alternative method for the housing matter is or would be, but something has to be done.

And there you have it – my experience with the GenCon Housing system for GenCon 50 this year. I’m not proud of some moments during this process, and it did give me a strong reminder that I really do have learn to manage stress better and stop freaking out at every (freakin’) thing.

So anyone stay at the Westin Indianapolis in the past have some guidelines and hints? 🙂

And hopefully, I’ll see some of you folks at the convention! 🙂

Sunday Morning, and Gaming (Not) Thoughts February 12, 2017

It’s Sunday morning. A somewhat cold day here in the Ottawa valley.

I woke up this morning feeling somewhat tired and a little bit exhausted, as I’m feeling pretty ill due to the virus/cold thing that I’ve got.

The weather here in Ottawa is about to get nasty, with a major snow storm coming up today (around 25+ centimetres of snow expected), and as I look out the window, it’s started to snow pretty hard. Tammy won’t be out to today regardless, as she’s got an infected tooth – and there’s that weather thing. I’ve just spoken to SteveR, and told him Tammy won’t be out, and he agreed that we’ll take the day off from gaming.

Speaking of gaming, the GenCon 2017 Housing registration begins today at 12:00 noon. I was assigned a time of 6:37pm tonight to access the Housing Portal, so we’ll see how that goes…or doesn’t. (I don’t have fond memories of the process from 2015, so…) I just hope that I manage to get the hotel that I’m trying for, but I’ve got a plan this year in case that doesn’t work out.

No gaming this afternoon with the Sunday group means I’ll be taking it easy this afternoon. May do a bit of reading of the Coriolis – The Third Horizon main rulebook, but the (new) book is still very smelly (and seems to be bothering my lungs).

In the meantime, I’m going to take a hot shower. Hopefully feel better, too.

A Long Week Ahead February 6, 2017

It promises to be a long, somewhat unenjoyable week.

I’m going sometime later this morning for my three-month blood tests before my endo appointment next week at the Diabetes Clinic. The fasting for the blood work always kills me, because it throws my metabolism off and really wreaks havoc on my bowels for the next couple of days.

On Tuesday, I have my annual eye check-up, and I’m a little bit concerned as I feel my vision has changed notably in my left eye. The eye appointment is a pain in the neck, as to be honest the fluids they put in my eyes (notably the eye dilator) takes a good 6 hours to dissipate for me, and my vision becomes blurry and suffers from “too bright” symptoms for that period. Not to mention the headaches I get from it. To add to the misery, the annual eye appointments are always before 10:30 am in the morning, and I sometimes don’t get to eat breakfast before that appointment. So I’ll have to wait and see what happens tomorrow in that regard.

Given that I’ve been somewhat ill with either a cold, a virus, or some sort of flu the last week or two, this does not make things easier for the week. And I’ve not been feeling myself lately, to be honest about it.

And to add to the week, I have a decision or three to make about GenCon Indy come the end of the week.

can’t make that appointment

Going to GenCon Indy Again January 29, 2017

Well, it’s official.

I haven’t been to the convention since 2015, but I figured that this year, I would make the effort and go to GenCon Indy one last time in 2017. And so that’s what I’m going to do.

This morning, badge registration for GenCon opened at 12 noon EST, and I have gone and purchased my registration for the convention. The convention is the weekend of August 17th, and prices have gone up; the badge cost me $90+ U.S. (and while the Canadian dollar has risen a bit, it’s still not that great). SteveR hasn’t booked the airfares for the convention yet, but now it’s just a matter of booking the hotel when the Housing Registration begins on February 10th. (I’m so not looking forward to that craziness, but such is life.)

I hadn’t really planned to go to GenCon for 2017, but there are a couple of reasons for doing so. Firstly, this is GenCon 50 (yes, that’s right, the fiftieth!), which is something of an anniversary (to say the least), and I figured that it was worth going to this one. Secondly, my legs have been really bad (with some major foot problems), and I figure that going to the convention, barring something major happening to me ::knock on wood::, will be a good way of getting some walking in and some exercise. Lastly, this will be the last GenCon I’ll be going to, and likely the last gaming convention other than Ottawa’s CanGames, health willing. Age, health, and notably costs (convention membership, airfare, hotel, diabetes medication) are getting to be too much, and the uncomfortable nature of flying for me these days has made me take this decision. Add to that the current political situation in the U.S., and well… The 50th birthday of GenCon has to be worth the effort, right? 🙂 I might go to a couple of conventions in the future, other than CanGames, but these will likely be science fiction and fantasy conventions.

I haven’t decided yet whether I’ll be running any games at GenCon this time around; to be honest, I don’t want to carry any gaming books with me down to Indy. (I could be convinced to run something at GenCon, however, so if you want to do some persuading, drop me a line in the Comments or send me an e-mail.)

Like I said, all that awaits now is the trick of GenCon Housing.

Gaming Promise to Myself for 2017 January 9, 2017

One of the things I’ve promised myself for 2017 is to play rpgs more, rather than GM them.

Don’t get me wrong, I love GMing, and am looking forward to some of the games that I’ll be running in 2017, but I just want to be a player more this year than I have in the last 10 years or so. Playing gives me a rest from doing all the creating of gaming stuff entailed with running games and it allows me to re-energize the gaming creativity juices that running the games drain away, slowly but surely. The real plus about playing, however, is that it allows one to experience games from the other side of the GM Screen, and get a bit of perspective about running games and the players that one (usually) plays with.

I’m off to a good start this year, currently playing in DavidM’s Sixcess Core fantasy game and SteveR‘s Thousand Suns science fiction game, but I’m hoping to play in a few other games in the gaming groups this year, and that I’ll play in stuff at both CanGames 2017 and at GenCon 50.

While I’m currently running the Continuum game with the Wednesday gaming group, the playing in the other two games has given me something of a break in terms of running and creating. It’s quite…tiring, at times, to run stuff on the three gaming groups as I usually do, so this is an interesting break period of sorts.

It’s Friday morning. Almost got to the weekend.

It’s another hot day here in Ottawa, with an expected high of 32oC (with a humidex of around 39 or 40), so I’ll be trying to stay inside as much as possible.

Work this morning is fine, though somewhat busy, but I’ll be off to the hospital for another appointment in the early afternoon. At least this will be the last one for the week, thank Goddess.

I started the higher dose of Gabapentin yesterday, and I have to say that it’s making a little bit of a difference pain-wise, though it’s also left me feeling a bit calmer, as well as somewhat slowing me down (at least that’s how it feels). Hopefully, the side effects of the new dose won’t last too long, but we’ll see how that goes.

I’m looking forward to gaming this evening with the Friday night group, but I’ll talk about that in a separate post later today.

And finally, needless to say, I’ve spent way too much time on Twitter following some of the thread about GenCon 2016, and checking out various photos people have posted about the convention so far. Quite envious, of course, but dealing with it. Besides, I’ve got plenty of stuff to read in the Polaris 3rd Edition game materials, as well as some of the rpg editing I’m currently doing. So definitely keeping busy gaming-wise. 🙂
