And so the start of the 2017-2018 NHL hockey season is upon us.

The Ottawa Senators will not be playing until tomorrow (Thursday), and that’s a game that I’m looking forward to as the Sens will home to play the Washington Capitals. But…

Hockey’s back!

I will say that I’m not thrilled about how little off-season changes the Ottawa Senators made to their line-up. I’m a die-hard Senators fan, and I like to think (as all hockey fans do at this stage of the season) that the Sens will make the playoffs, though I don’t know how deep they’ll go and whether they’ll be able to drink from Lord Stanley’s cup. The Sens surprised everyone last year by not only making the playoffs, but also by coming within one goal of beating the Pittsburgh Penguins to go the finals. There’s a few rule changes this year that should make the game better, notably the slash to the hands penalty being enforced, but we’ll see how that shakes out. I still wish the league had gotten rid of the shootout and overtime business in regular season games, as overtime should be reserved for the playoffs, but 3-on-3 overtime was exciting last year, to say the least! While there’s a good crop of rookies this year, the focus will be on the Sidney Crosby-Connor McDavid rivalry and the Austen Matthews-Patrick Laine rivalry that’s starting to brew.

From the pov of the Ottawa Senators, the keys are Erik Karlsson (who won’t be in the starting line-up for a bit), Craig Anderson and Bobby Ryan. While Mark Stone and Mike Hoffman have to repeat the success they had last year, those three are the big factors. Craig Anderson has to have another terrific year in goal. Eric Karlsson needs to have another Norris Award-winning season, and he has to make it last the whole year, without Marc Methot (now a Dallas Star). And finally, Bobby Ryan needs to get back on track and be the goal scorer that Ottawa dealt for in the trade with Anaheim.

Meantime…

Go, Sens, Go! 🙂

It has been a long day.

Woke up this morning feeling somewhat tired and ill, and my right hand and arm were bothering me somewhat. The left shoulder was still agonizing and not comfortable, and I’m still limited in mobility with that arm. The weather was horrible outside, pounding rain, and somewhat cold. Probably didn’t help with my body aching all over. I got up, managed the morning rituals, and then had breakfast (egg scramble with some toast, a bit of jam, and some yogurt followed by coffee).

After breakfast, I did a bit of reading and wrote some notes down about my current scenario idea for the Primeval RPG, and then showered. The hot water seemed to help with my shoulder somewhat, but the muscles were still tense when I finished bathing. I checked some e-mail on the computer, and then perused a couple of on-line sites for stuff that I’m currently interested in.

After lunch, SteveR dropped by, and we went out in the rain. The first stop was the Freedom Mobile store, where I (finally) picked a case for my Samsung Galaxy A5 mobile phone, a travel charger, and a protective layer cover for the screen. Cost me over $70, but I was expecting that, I guess. From there, it was over to Staples, as I needed to do the photocopying of various sheets (player character sheets, mostly) for the four games I’ll be running at CanGames 2017 in just a day short of two weeks. Needed to do copying of material for two Coriolis – The Third Horizon games, a Primeval game, and a Tales From the Loop game, so that ran me a bit of money (but I had budgeted for that).

Picked up a couple of croissant for tomorrow morning’s breakfast, and then stopped off at a Tim Horton’s to check out the new latte that they’re offering, but it doesn’t come in a decaf format (should have known this, given that it’s espresso coffee), so I guess I won’t be having any of that any time soon. Oh, well.

SteveR dropped me off at the house with the various stuff, and after a quick rest for about 5 minutes, he headed for home, and I am watching the Ottawa Senators-New York Rangers NHL playoff game (the Sens are currently leading 3-2 near the end of the 2nd period of play).

My Canada Day, 2016 July 2, 2016

Yesterday was Canada Day, for those who missed it.

When it comes right down to it, I didn’t miss it so much as I decided that I was going to take the day relatively easy and relax at home. That, and catching up with a few things.

My left ankle and leg were hurting pretty badly when I woke up, so I started the day off on a relatively slow note, and did a bit of house cleaning that needed to be done. I’m currently reading Artemis Awakening by Jane Lindskold and rather enjoying the book, as well as some gaming material that I can’t talk about. I had a relatively light lunch, a bowl of vegetable soup and a cheese sandwich. Yummy!

The early part of the afternoon saw the start of NHL Free Agency and so I tuned in to TSN for decent coverage of that. July 1st is the start of the NHL Free Agency period, and there were a ton of signings in the first hour, but things gradually tapered off after that. I was disappointed that the Ottawa Senators didn’t make a move during this time, but I am hoping that they’re biding their time to make a trade or two once all the dust settles and other clubs see how they’re either tight to or over the NHL salary cap.

I also sat down and did some gaming stuff for the afternoon; I created a Maroc (no, I’m not going to explain the term here!) for the original version of the Promised Sands RPG. Suffice to say, the creation of the Maroc was time consuming as well as frustrating, due to how the rules for character creation deal with them, and the fact that the material on them is organised atrociously. I firmly believe that Promised Sands Sixcess (or 2nd Edition, as I like to think of it) will do a much better job all around, and am looking forward to that. I plan to convert this character (and a couple of others that I’ve created) over to the new version of the game when it comes out, but egads!, what a gnarly session of character creation that was for me!

After making a simple supper of pasta, meat sauce, and a simple salad with some green beans added, I sat down and waited for the Friday night gamers to arrive, putting my left leg (and ankle) up for a while. I’m not going into details here about the gaming session, other than to say I had a pleasant (birthday) surprise, but I’ll blog about the evening more when I get a chance. Terrific night of gaming though. 🙂

Finally, after taking my insulin injection for the evening, I went to bed, read for about 20 minutes, and turned off the light.

All in all, a decent Canada day with nothing really exciting going on. A simple, relatively peaceful day where I could just relax and take it easy.
