It’s the start of October. A new month.

To be honest, I’m really happy to see the rear end of September.

While there were a few good moments in the month, September was a month that I will remember because of the pain.

Most of the pain is in my left leg, my feet, my left shoulder, and my abdomen. (I’ve actually got a bad bruise from an insulin shot that is over a week old and going away very slowly. I expected this to take a while as being diabetic, the healing process is slowed down somewhat. What I wasn’t expecting was the pain that goes along with it, and there have been days where I’ve been in absolute agony trying to walk.

Anyway, here’s hoping that October is a comfortable month, and that winter doesn’t strike too early or too hard at all. ::knock on wood::

I’m currently down with my yearly infection during the late September/early October period, so that’s no different this year. I’m taking it as easy as I can, but I’ve lost my voice. Lots of fun ordering my insulin and other prescriptions.

In the meantime, let pumpkin madness strike. 🙂

It’s the start of September. A new month.

I’m really glad to see the back end of August. While there were a few good things that happened in August, notably gaming-wise, most of August was miserable for me and the end of the month was particularly bad with more bad news health-wise.

While the beginning of September hasn’t been all that much fun, given the heat and humidity today so far, I’m really hoping that September is a good month for me and that I get a chance to do some gaming, some reading, and that my feet and legs get a chance to rest and perhaps start to feel better. On the shoulder front, that’s just a matter of seeing what the physiotherapy does for me.

In the meantime, I’ve spent the afternoon out grocery shopping (though I also bought a set of bed sheets today), and have just taken care of and sent off a contract for a new rpg job that will challenge me for the month.

No gaming last night with the Friday group as it’s their week off, and tomorrow promises to be interesting as SteveR has Tammy and me finish up our player characters for his Star Trek Adventures game. Should be interesting.

Civic Holiday (Colonel By Day) Thoughts August 6, 2018

Monday, the civic holiday here in Canada. Colonel By Day, officially.

I’m feeling somewhat giddy after the gaming experience on the weekend, but am hurting quite a lot in the left shoulder and the area of the various muscles that come off the shoulder. My exercises are helping somewhat, but stressing the body parts, I suspect. No plans for the day, to be honest, other than to catch up on some reading, some PVR (and maybe some DVD) watching, do a bit of laundry and change the bed linens.

I’ve got two medical appointments the last four days of the week, so that should make life interesting this week as well.

The Coming Week July 23, 2018

The week ahead promises to be…difficult.

I’ve got a lot of stuff going on this week, but the really urgent part is Thursday’s (the 26th) appointment at the hospital to go over the MRI results and the my physiotherapy appointment immediately after that.

The hospital appointment has been a long time coming, to be honest, but it had to wait until after the MRI was done June 26th. The hospital has had the MRI results for a while now, but so has the physio clinic that I go to; the thing is, the physiotherapist wouldn’t treat me again until she had the results of the MRI, so I’ve not been to physio for close to two months now. Hasn’t helped the shoulder, to be honest. 😦

But that’s about to change this week, as I’ve got the physio appointment, and am really looking forward to that. Crazy, huh?

Add to that my sister is coming from the U.S. to visit, and my cousin from Israel is also coming to visit (as next week is mom’s birthday), and it’s going to be a long, long week or two.

MRI Results and a Rough Afternoon June 26, 2018

It has been a very long day.

I went for my doctor’s appointment at 1:15 pm, and got the results of my MRI on the left shoulder.

After waiting about 10 minutes to see the doctor, he came in and we discussed my general health (I would rate it fair to middling at this point), then got down to business. The MRI came back as normal, with the exception of some inflammation in a couple of places, but nothing that would account for the pain that I’ve experienced the last two years or so. He told me that he’s going to make an appointment with a specialist (one that’s already in the works, but could take a maximum of 18 months to get, as they’re very much in demand these days), but that in the meantime I should go back and continue my physiotherapy. So that’s what I’ll be working towards this week, but with the long weekend coming up and Canada Day and everything ahead, might not be ’til some time next week.

From the doctor’s office, I went and had some lunch at Tim Horton’s, and then went to do some grocery shopping for some veggies and a few other necessities. And, of course, wouldn’t you know it but I moved the left arm the wrong way or lifted something too heavy with it or whatever, and *SNAP!* just like that, I had excruciating pain in the left shoulder and down the arm, and my neck started hurting. I drove the car and got home from the shopping, and managed to put things away, and then lay back for a bit and took some pain killers.

Time to start thinking of supper now, though I’m not sure how long I’ll be able to stand in the kitchen and make the food. Some water to drink first before anything else, though.

Getting Ready for Friday Night Gaming January 26, 2018

It’s Friday night, and so another game session with the Friday players.

I wasn’t sure that I’d be able to run the game tonight, given the fact that my house was left a shambles when the new fridge, dryer and washer were installed and all yesterday late in the day. Cleaning up the place and moving all the furniture and knick-knacks back wasn’t easy, and I’m in serious pain now in the neck/shoulder/arm/hand region, and I think I’ve put too much stress on the other arm. It’s hurting too.

Be that as it may, I’m getting ready for this evening’s game session with the Friday night players, and am really looking forward to it. I’m looking forward to this evening’s session of The Dark Eye RPG.

Oops, there’s the doorbell. Gotta go.

Have a good night, folks.

How I Spent My Christmas Day December 26, 2017

Yesterday was Christmas Day. Being a single fellow, with little family left in the world, and not celebrating Christmas to boot, ’twas a day where I got to spend much of it on my own. Well, actually all of it.

Suffice to say, the day passed relatively uneventfully. I was in a lot of head/neck/shoulder/arm/hand pain when I woke up, and realised it was a lost day. I managed to make a pancake breakfast (with sugar free syrup) for myself, but that didn’t help the pain that I was in, in fact making it somewhat worse.

The rest of the day was spent napping, doing a bit of (gaming) reading, watching a DVD (I can’t remember what, will have to get it off the watched shelf and see what it was… it was the Doctor Who DVD of “The Power of the Daleks”), and just trying to sit in chairs and in a comfortable position that didn’t make me want to scream in pain from the problem(s) mentioned above. Listened to a bit of music, predominantly Annie Haslam and some Renaissance, and was able to mellow out somewhat. Only heard from one person during the day, and that was Kathy. She called to find out how I was doing, to wish me a Happy holiday season, and to tell me that Ellie had loved the Christmas present I’d made sure she’d received.

I managed to struggle through making supper, and treated myself to a couple of latkes (a Hanukkah tradition) with some apple sauce for dessert. After cleaning the dishes away, I sat back and watched the Doctor Who Christmas special, “Twice Upon a Time”. What can I say about it? It was a lovely episode, a fitting end for Peter Capaldi’s Doctor, with masterful performances by both Capaldi and David Bradley (as the First Doctor), and introduced new Doctor Jodie Whitaker in a sequence that left me waiting to see what comes next. There was some stuff that I didn’t like about the episode, but I won’t get into that simply because I don’t have the energy and typing just isn’t that easy these days. I’m going to miss Peter Capaldi’s Doctor for the most part, but won’t miss Steven Moffat’s showrunning.

After the story wrapped up (1-1/2 hours, including adverts), I took my nightly insulin shot, took my evening pill and some of the Gabapentin, and had an early night of it. Once in bed, I read for about twenty minutes, and then tried to get some sleep.

The Human Need December 10, 2017

Yesterday was a strange day.

I woke up feeling relatively all right, as the term “relatively” is used about myself these days. Frankly, it meant that I didn’t scream from the pain in the hand/arm/shoulder/neck/back when I got out of bed.

I went about the morning stuff, and took it fairly easy and didn’t feel all that bad. Since I’ve had some cabin fever of late and really did feel a bit better, I decided to go out and find some companionship. (No, not that way, silly readers! I’m not up for that at the moment, to be honest. But thanks for thinking it.

I risked taking a drive (given my current health state and the medication for pain I’m taking) over to Billings Bridge Centre, as I needed to pick up a 2018 calendar and just wanted some time among the (human) herd, so to speak. So where better than a shopping centre during the Christmas season?

I went up to the food court and had some lunch, and then headed over and picked up the calendar, though not the one I was looking for, before thinking of heading home. But I was quite relaxed and enjoying my time among the human herd. So I went and sat down at a nice, comfy bench with a good cushion on it, and sat and people watched for a couple of hours, and just…absorbed all the human (inter)action around me. By the time I left the shopping mall and got home, I was feeling somewhat more human again…though I did feel very pained in the body parts that are bothering me these days.

Woke up this morning very early, due to the bad pain in the hand/arm/shoulder/neck/back areas, and while I feel I know that I’m paying for the afternoon out, I’m feeling somewhat better about myself and a bit more human again. And that’s all that counts.

In the meantime, I feel like having pancakes for my late breakfast, and that’s what I’m going to do.

Home From the Montfort (Hospital) October 30, 2017

I just got home from the Montfort Hospital about 10 minutes ago. I’m exhausted, shaking with the pain and spasms in both arms, and…tired.

I had to be at the hospital tonight around 8:45 pm, 45 minutes in advance of my MRI tests. I finally decided, given the cold, blowing, and somewhat rainy weather, to take a cab to the hospital, as I just couldn’t trust my left arm and shoulder driving, and it’s a good thing I did given that I’m in pain and suffering arm spasms since the tests were done.

I arrived by taxi at the Montfort Hospital around 8:35 pm, and had to walk on my still tender feet (remember the blisters? Not fully healed yet) almost the length of the hospital to the Registration area and then to the Imaging labs. After registering and filling in a questionnaire that is mandatory before MRIs, I had a devil of a time changing out of my clothes into a hospital gown because of my left shoulder and arm difficulties. I then was helped by the technician and her aide onto the flatbed of the MRI machine.

I’ve had an MRI before this, I believe twice, so I thought I was prepared for the process again, but I was wrong. Thank Goddess I’m not too claustrophobic, though, or perhaps it’s just that the MRI tube doesn’t induce that in me. In any event, I was having a cervical spinal set of MRI tests done, and so my head was completely inside the tube. Even with the sound deadening headphones and the music of CHEZ 106 playing, it was deafening in there, with the pops, wheezing, thumping, rattling, and other sounds of the MRI device during the 20-25 minutes scan. Don’t remember it being so noisy the last couple of times. I should hear back on the MRI test results within the next week to two weeks or so.

By the time, I came out of the scanner, my left shoulder was stabbingly painful, my muscles in the lower arms were throbbing and spasming, the left shoulder feeling like every nerve was on fire. It also generates some heat, and I was soaked with sweat (a condition that I was told for this procedure was normal), but I was somewhat dizzy as well. I had to rest in the waiting room for about 15 minutes, and then proceeded back to the main hospital lobby area and ordered a cab home.

Once I got home, I was barely able to take my insulin shot successfully, and had a hot cup of chamomile tea. I collapsed into my den chair, and I’ve been scribing this WordPress entry. As soon as this is done, folks, I’m off to bed. I need to take a couple of Tylenols before I hit the bed, methinks.

Night, all.

Today promises to be a very long day.

I did not sleep well last night. Between the bouts of coughing that I had in the late evening and that led to some bad diarrhea, as well as the sheer agonypain that my left shoulder/arm/neck/back are currently suffering, sleep did not come easy and when it did come, tossing and turning were the best that I managed to have.

To make the day even longer for this Monday, I have my appointment at the Montfort Hospital this evening for an MRI at 9:30 pm. Not sure how I’m going to get there yet, since my left arm and shoulder are so bad that I can’t use the arm for much of anything these days.

Ah, well… one step during the day at a time.
