Day 15 – Which RPG do you enjoy adapting the most?

This is a tough one, since I’m not sure I actually understand the question.

In the case of adapting something into an rpg, I would have to say that I rather enjoy adapting the Mark Schultz Xenozoic Tales (aka Cadillacs & Dinosaurs) to a roleplaying game set of rules, since I don’t really like the GDW game that came out. There are also a couple of other game concepts, mostly from novels, that I’d love to adapt but there just isn’t time and all that.

If you’re thinking of adapting material into a pre-existing rpg, I would have to say that it’s been fun adapting material from the Arabian Nights stories into the Coriolis – The Third Horizon RPG, as that’s been a good challenge. I’m also looking forward to adapting some of the Scandinavian myths and legends into the Trudvang Chronicles RPG when that game comes out.

(Note: This is the last entry that I’ll be making for the month until I get back from GenCon 2017, at which time I’ll be playing at least a week of catch-up.)

Day 14 – Which RPG do you prefer for open-ended campaign play?

In my opinion, I think that every rpg out there is suitable for open-ended campaign play, but it takes some effort on the part of the GM to run such a campaign and to keep making new game scenarios and materials for such campaigns. And this also takes effort and work on the part of the players to make such a campaign successful.

That said, I can see where some rpgs, like those suitable for children, might not be suited to open-ended campaigns, but suspect that they can be adapted to such play, depending on the children playing the game and the person running it wanting to take it in that direction.

(Note: Just so that folks know, since I’m going to GenCon Indy tomorrow, I’ll be posting tomorrow’s #RPGaDay entry automatically tomorrow, but will catch up on the rest of the month when I get back from Indianapolis.)

Day 13 – Describe a game experience that changed how you play.

This is a tough one for me.

That said, I think the game experience that changed how I play happened when my goddaughter, Ellie, started to actually play with the Friday night gaming group when she was 9 years old or so. While she’d been at the gaming table on and off since she was very small, it was when she actually expressed an interest in and started playing with us that my gaming style changed somewhat. More sensitive to the needs of younger players as well as being more…choosy…in terms of the language I use at the table. And with Ellie joining the group, there was a shift in gender majority as well, so that provided some useful lessons, too.

Day 12 – Which RPG has the most inspiring art?

Interesting question.

I’ve got an interesting answer to this.

For the older rpgs out there, the most inspiring art for me came from the old DragonQuest RPG from SPI as well as the fantastic art for the SkyRealms of Jorune RPG that inspired so many story ideas for me back in the day.

From the modern day, the artwork for the Chill 3rd Edition RPG, as well as that of the Coriolis – The Third Horizon and the soon-to-be-released Trudvang Chronicles RPG have been the most inspirational artwork.

Day 11 – Which “dead game” would you like to see reborn?

For me, this is a no-brainer.

I would dearly like to see the SkyRealms of Jorune game reborn. While the game universe doesn’t need changing too much, the game system needs to be seriously revamped somewhat.

I’d *kill* to see SoJ reborn. *sigh*

Day 10 – Where do you go for RPG reviews?

Truth be told, I’ve given up a long time ago on reading rpg reviews from various websites and the like.

That said, I don’t go in for reviews, per sé, but rely more on what friends have to say on the subject. I trust their insights, and they have a pretty good idea of my taste in game settings and mechanics. (Well, I like to think so.)

Day 9 – What is a good RPG to play to play for about 10 sessions?

This one’s easy…

Pretty much any roleplaying game out with, with maybe one or two exceptions (in my opinion), are suitable to running for around 10 sessions. No-brainer, to be honest.

Day 8 – What is a good RPG to play for sessions of 2 hours or less?

To be honest, I’m not really sure about this, but I can take a stab at the question.

I think there are several rpgs out there that can be played in a couple of hours. These include Mermaid Adventures, Atomic Highway, and from personal experience, Tales From the Loop. There are probably a lot of other rpgs out there that work for a 2-hour session, but I’m not really up on them.

Really don’t have that much to add on this subject.

Day 7 – What was your most impactful RPG session?

I’m not really sure what is meant by this question, but…

Two game sessions come to mind, depending on how one interprets the question. The first was a game session of the old Universe SF RPG from the folks at SPI. The player characters knew that there were alien shape-shifters infiltrating the facility that they were at, and when one of the player characters was mortally injured by the one masquerading as the doctor, the other player characters took her to the doctor’s medlab for treatment. The dying player character knew full well that the doctor was the shape-shifter, and was afraid he would kill her, but couldn’t tell the other characters about this due to her condition. Sure enough, the shape-shifter killed her when the others left to find the shape-shifter. A truly emotional scene.

The second session was my very first running of the Primeval RPG, in which a group of characters encountered their first prehistoric creature – a T. rex! The scene was an action-packed session from start to finish, with the player characters running from the creature whih doggedly pursued them. They ran smack into a pack of large herbivores, and spent the rest of the game session leading the T. rex away from the Scutasauruses and their infants, eventually getting the dinosaur to fall into a ravine after it teetered on the edge for some time. Pure adrenalin and the rush of it all for an entire game session. Loved it.

Day 6 – You can game every day for a week. What do you do?

Well, to start off with… I don’t think that I would actually game every day for a week. I’m not as young as I like to be any more, and my days of gaming every day are long over.

But that said, if I could do that… I would run a continuous game of the Torg: Eternity RPG (the new system) where I’d run a Day 1 adventure for the players, and then continue from there running consecutive days. Stopping for sleep, food and hygiene in no particular order. 🙂 And ending the game with a massive climax of some sort that leaves the players begging to do it all over again! 🙂
