For those who may have noticed, I did not game yesterday (Friday) evening.

The reason for this is that I spent much of Friday night and all of Saturday morning in the hospital.

I started feeling pretty bad on Friday (the 13th!) with very bad lower abdominal pain and bleeding down below. That’s when I decided that I’d get myself over to the Ottawa General Hospital. Took a cab over. I got to the hospital around 9:25 pm. Managed to get through triage relatively quickly and was feeling pretty meh. Couldn’t sit in a chair properly, so found an empty seating area (relatively speaking) and stretched out as best I could.

Several hours later, I was admitted into the Observation wing, and after hooking me up to an IV and taking blood samples and some other tests including my favourite (the DRE) NOT!, I was told that it might be diverticulitis and was scheduled to have an abdominal CT scan. They hooked me up with a saline solution to hydrate me, since I wasn’t allowed any water (chips) or food, and also gave me a shot or three of Delaudid for the pain. The nurse who was keeping an eye on me took a photo around 1:10 a.m..

All I remember at the time of the picture taking is that I was seriously uncomfortable from the pain, and really tired. Couldn’t sleep, ’cause I couldn’t lie on the bed for long periods of time because of the back and shoulder issues.

I had the abdominal CT scan around 7:20 am today. They injected a dye that made me warm all over, but the CT scan lasted all of 1 minute, 30 seconds, and then I was left on the bed for the trip back over to Observation for 25 minutes. It was very cold in the hallway.

Anyway, the good news is that I don’t have diverticulitis or any form of cancer down there. Not going to go into any detail about what’s happening with my bowels and the like, but a treatment has been prescribed, and now I just deal.

Got home around 11:50 a.m. this morning. Hunger warred with a desire for sleep, and food won out. Then went to bed and slept for several hours.

I’m hurting all over, and the bruising and pain where I had the IV and then the bloodwork done on the other hand is pretty bad. Can’t use either hand really well, but have managed to type this. The abdominal pain is still pretty bad, too. 😦

Taking it easy the rest of today. Have to wait and see what tomorrow brings.

Just got home about 20 minutes or so ago from the Diabetes Centre and my six-month appointment with the diabetes and endocrine specialist there.

The news was better than I expected, but not all that great.

I got to the Riverside Hospital for my 3:20 pm appointment about 10 minutes early, and sat and relaxed while I waited to see the doctor. I didn’t have a long wait, and then got to see one of the nurses and technicians, who weighed me and took my blood pressure. I was down about four (!!) pounds weight-wise, and my blood pressure was perfectly normal. Guess those pills are doing their work. Good news. About 20 minutes later, I got to see the doctor, and that’s where things went a bit…south.

We went over my blood test results, and things were pretty much as I expected. My a1C results were up by a full two points (and I’m not saying what it was here). The triglycerides are very high, but my cholesterol levels seem to be doing better. The PSA test results were down slightly from the previous, but he told me that he’ll make sure that my family doctor keeps alert and up-to-date on the PSA stuff (for obvious reasons, at least if you’re a man over 50 years old!). We talked at length about what’s been going on in my life medically (for those who don’t know, it’s been pretty clear in my blog entries!), and he decided not to make any medication changes, but did say that I need to get back on some sort of healthier diet again. I also talked to him about the physiotherapy Catch-22 that I’m in right now, and he said that while it’s usually outside his purview, he’d arrange for me to have a shoulder MRI as soon as possible. We talked about a few other medical concerns I have, and then we were done.

After making the next appointment and setting up the blood tests and the like for the next time around in six months, I managed to get home relatively quickly with my sister, and got home about 25 minutes ago. Will now have a hot cup of tea and half a bagel with lox, and then sit back with my feet up and do a bit of reading.

Home From the Eye Examination February 27, 2018

Just got back from the eye specialist at the Eye Institute at the Ottawa General.

I was a little bit concerned, as I’ve had some blurry vision of late (but I try to account for that due to the bug I’ve had and some of the stuff going on with my spinal nerves and the shoulder business). On top of that, I’ve had some instances where I think I’ve got a tiny blank spot in my vision; it’s come and gone so fast that I sometimes think it’s my imagination. So enough worries about my vision going into the yearly exam.

I was the last appointment of the morning with the specialist, Dr. Mintsoulis, and managed to get in only about 15 minutes late. I didn’t drive, having taken a taxi since my vision wouldn’t be that good after the appointment because of the dilation drops they have to use for the tests. Anyway, once I got to the exam clinic, I got taken in very quickly (last appointment may have its advantages), and the tests were had.

Suffice it to say, I was given the freezing drops, the dilation drops, and another set of drops that leaves a bit of a yellow residue around the eye for several hours. I had all the standard eye tests, including the vision test where you tell them letters you see on board at the far end of the room with various lenses affecting your vision. In addition, I had the pressure test and the one that I have once every few years. A small needle takes a sample of eye fluid for testing for retinopathy and several other conditions.

Pending the results of the last test, the verdict was pretty good. My vision has degraded somewhat, but not worth the cost of a new pair of lenses and specs. There are no visual symptoms of retinopathy and nothing else seems to be out of place with my eyes, other than a case of eye dryness.

I left the hospital and went out for a late brunch at a well hidden decent restaurant for breakfast in South Ottawa, and then headed home. Both trips by taxi, of course. I got home, and made a hot cup of tea. I took a (second) shower when I got home, but the eyes were still pretty bad from the morning tests, and I’ve been feeling under the weather the last few days. Feeling pretty dysfunctional for the afternoon as the eye dilation drops and the other drops they gave me for the eye exam made everything bright, blurry, and larger than life.

I spent most of the afternoon napping, after covering myself with a duvet and just lying down on the couch in the living room.

The eye dilator solution still hasn’t worn off fully. Fuzzy vision is so much fun. (Riiiiight.)

Gaming for this evening, Wednesday night, has been cancelled.

It has been a horrible day, to be honest, and the appointment with the specialist, a sports medicine and orthopedic surgeon, did not go well. Very badly, to be honest, and the diagnosis and prognosis are not good. Add to that the pain that I’m currently in (on a 0 to 10 scale, I’m at 11 or so), and I just don’t feel up to gaming.

So gaming is off.

Personally, I’m sorry that I had to cancel gaming tonight, as I was rather looking forward to continuing work with the Wednesday night gamers on the The Dark Eye RPG characters and campaign with them, but such is life. Real, that is.

Doctor Appointment and MRI Results November 14, 2017

Just got home from the appointment with the doctor.

This appointment was the follow-up to the previous appointment, and the second MRI that I had done last week.

The MRI(s) results were…not good. I’m still coming to terms with the results, and their implications for me. In the meantime, I’ve got to see a specialist to decide what to do about the (major) problem that has come up. I have to call the specialist tomorrow to set up an appointment to see him.

Meanwhile, the back/shoulder/arm/neck pain continues to worsen.

Nothing more to add at this point.

Physiotherapy Appointment Results August 4, 2017

It’s Friday morning.

I feel pretty good this morning, but the left shoulder and the area there are hurting pretty bad. Probably due to the “exercise” it got yesterday.

Speaking of which, I had my physiotherapy assessment and first treatment yesterday afternoon. I managed to get to the appointment barely on time (they only do assessments at certain times, so if you’re not on time, they may not be able to take you) due to a snafu with ParaTranspo that had me end up taking a taxi to the appointment.

Once checked in, the assessment took something like 45 minutes. The verdict is that I tore the upper back muscle that connects to the shoulder and rotator cuff some 5 months ago, and it has not healed properly (likely due to overuse). In addition, there’s a lot of edema and damage to the shoulder and muscles around the joint. Physiotherapy will help it a lot, but the physiotherapist discouraged me from getting a steroid shot in the shoulder, as she didn’t think it would help (since there’s no real problem with the shoulder socket itself).

I then underwent the first treatment session that consisted of some exercises, a deep massage on the area (that hurt like the dickens), and finally some electro stimulation. I felt much better after the session, and have booked two more appointments for next week. She also advised me not to lift anything relatively heavy and to not extend the arm too far or raise it higher than my shoulder for a little while, as this could aggravate things. Will definitely make things interesting when I go down to Indianapolis in around 12 days. *sigh*

After the appointment, I had a really good lunch at the coffeeshop/cafeteria in the building: a nice bowl of hamburger and veggie soup with a roast beef and havarti wrap. Filling, and satisfying. After that, I went home and did some work on stuff that I’ve been meaning to do.

My only complaint today is the fact that my shoulder is hurting like hell, as mentioned above. Meds and some tidying around the house and a bit of reading will help. I hope.

Results of the Ultrasound Tests July 12, 2017

I had my doctor appointment yesterday to find out what the results of the x-ray and shoulder ultrasounds showed.

The appointment was for 2:15 pm, but I didn’t get in to see the doctor until close to 2:50 pm so it was a relatively long wait in the office. Once inside, the nurse weighed me. I was pleased to see that I hadn’t gained any weight, but I hadn’t lost any weight either.

Suffice to say, the test results were all negative. As far as he could tell, there’s nothing wrong with my shoulder, but he can see the pain’s real and that I have little movement in it, and there’s a good amount of swelling around it. Since it could be something to do with vertebral discs, he’s going to set up an MRI of my upper spine and the area, and see what that shows. In the meantime, he suggested (very strongly) that I go have some physiotherapy on the shoulder to try and get some of the mobility back and strength built up there.

Should be fun. NOT.

In the meantime, I’m in a lot of pain there. And it’s affecting the use of my arm quite badly at the moment.

Nothing to report of any consequence.

I am still sick. Coughing away, some blood. Left shoulder in severe pain (the coughing has probably not helped.) And to top it off, I’m still talking like a fracking choking frog. Barely have any voice.

The doctor still hasn’t received the x-rays that were taken at the hospital the same day I went to see him. Bugger it all. 😦

Working from home. Just trying to cope. Not doing it very well.

Just got back from the doctor’s office to get the results of my blood tests.

The news on my triglycerides was very good, but the other news is not good…in fact, it’s very, very bad.

I– I have a lot of stuff to digest after this doctor’s appointment, and have to make some very hard decisions.

I– I– I can’t talk about this at the moment. Sorry.

Well, my fears and suspicions have been confirmed.

I went to the doctor’s office for my appointment early this afternoon, and things came out pretty much as I expected. The doctor listened to my chest and stuff, checked my ears and throat, and told me that there was definite “crackling” in my right lung and some in the left, and confirmed that I’ve got bronchitis. He reassured me that it’s not as bad as it might be, but that a course of antibiotics was called for, and prescribed some Biaxin/Clarithromycin. Meanwhile, the harsh coughing continues at times. So what else is new?

The appointment itself was to go over my latest diabetes test results and a general health check-up, and we talked about various things. Contrary to what the endo had said, my PSA test results were higher than the previous one, not lower, and he’s sending me for another PSA blood test in about a month. As for the diabetes, the doctor was content with where I am right now with it, but that I do need to get the a1C and my triglyceride levels down somewhat (okay, a lot with the latter!).

Went and picked up the antibiotic on the way home, after eating some lunch at Aamp;W. While the root beer (sugar-free!) is great, I’m not crazy about their food, though the sweet potato fries were nice (though not as good as the ones I’ve eaten in Kansas City). Got home, caught up on a bit of e-mail, and watched some curling action at the Scott Tournament of Hearts. Fell asleep (not surprising really, given the night that I’d had), and then did some reading of more Coriolis – The Third Horizon game stuff.

Just about time to make some supper, and then see where the evening leads me. More curling viewing, I suspect. 🙂
